Independent Play

Hello, just wondering whether your 20 month olds are playing independently or are they still very much all over you when you're with them, like my little girl is? I'll draw her attention to her toys, sit with her during play and she will play but the moment I go to have a drink of water or sit on the couch she is following and climbing on me, clawing at my top (still breastfeeding). Is this developmentally typical? When will they begin to independent play and become engrossed in what they're doing? Yet to see much focus from little one.

Hey, it’s nothing to worry about my daughter is 20months and does it too. Children play independently when they want to but they’ll usually just rather have us around. I encourage independent play by placing my daughter in her high chair and she literally just gets on with it, I just have to keep changing activities and maybe just talk to her during play so she still feels my presence x

Hey Charlotte. Mines exactly the same.

@Lyn. @Natasha Thank you both! I was looking at her pile of toys and thinking when will they ever be played with on her own initiative. Using the high chair is a good idea to keep her in one place so that she focuses more 👍
