Weaning

Weaning… When did everyone start weaning, I have a 4 month old but who is showing so much interest in food to the point he tries to grab it and gets frustrated when other people are eating I’ve constantly got my mum on my case saying I should start maybe giving him some baby rice or rusks in milk even though the guidelines are weaning at 6 months I’m very stuck on what to do

6 months for us as per guidelines x

We tried to start at 4 months because he was also so so ready! He was sitting by himself, interested in food, doing all the things BUT it did not go good! He was okay for like 2 weeks eating small amounts then with the baby cereal he would puke like an insane amount to the point on being limp. It was really really scary! His tummy just wasn’t quite ready. We reintroduced at 6 months and it was great! He’s now 10 months and eats everything, no issues and is a really great eater! I know it’s exciting and I didn’t want to wait either but I do think it’s worth it to wait!

Just stick to the guidelines, there's literally no hurry

Interest in food is not a sign of readiness by the way 6 and a half months. I waited until she could sit with minimal assistance, had good head control and had lost the toungue thrust. Also enjoy the milk poops. Food poops are 🤮

@Helen it's a different texture and colour everyday 😂😂😂

Weaning too early can cause problems for later in life as the guts just aren’t developed enough to deal with food. I’d honestly stick to milk until 6 months.

We started Sunday. She turned 6 months on Monday. My mum said the same until she went away and read the latest advice. She suggested it at just under 5 months and said we were weaning at 4 months. Then read the latest advice, she said "no don't listen to me, I did some research and reading on the latest advice" My girl was literally trying to grab food as we tried to eat. Doesn't mean their guts are ready for it.

Just over six months 👍

@Rhiannon I’m not in a hurry generally just looking for advice as I’ve heard a lot of conflicting stuff such as try when they start showing interest etc

@Jaymie-lee just because they're showing interest doesn't mean their little tummies are ready for it

Tastes start at 4months. Trying solids/start weaning at 6months They shouldn’t be weaned/eat until 1year for formula fed babes. 2 years for breastfed kids. For breastfed kids, I assume they can eat early by 1years old just like a regular formula fed child. I am assuming but I don’t know. Anything before 1years old is just complimentary foods. They don’t need to eat until 1years old anyway. Breastfed kids don’t have to eat until two ears of age. So it’s all complimentary.

We started at 4 months and now at almost 8 months we haven’t found a food he doesn’t like

Started just after 5 months but she showed all the signs of readiness and interest in food isn’t one of the signs. Someone said before if they have an interest in car keys you’re not gonna put them in the drivers seat and get them to drive to the shops😂so it’s a similar thing. We also started early because she is and was incredibly small so we hoped it would make a difference (it didn’t😂)
