Hello 👋 we are doing the same even though we are both Albanians with my partner

Aww that’s lovely. I’m learning Albanian myself but I’m still very new so raising our son bilingual will be a bit of a challenge!!

My son still doesnt speak yet even though we only speak albanian at home with some english words. He started nursery in January for like 2 full days a week ,it has helped him a bit he does understand both languages well only he’s not speaking just saying some words in english mostly. We had a speach therapist appointment and they told me to continue how i am just speaking to him in our language and she said some kids speak later so hopefully it changes soon. Another thing that may help is having friends with kids for playdates that they speak albanian even though i dont know that many here so its been difficult a bit but i think it will help him if he hears other kids talking the same language.😊

Oh might be a good idea to think about Albanian classes when the little one is older. I used to go private Albanian lessons for myself but finished when I gave birth! Worried I haven’t practised in a while after over 2 years of lessons

Hi Laura! We’ve been doing the same with our 7 year old and 21 month old. we’ve been to Albania every year since our 7 year old was born and she understands more - but can only speak like the basic stuff really, but my husband speaks English in the house obviously with me. However I would say I am 60% fluent in speaking it but 90% understanding!! It is a hard language to learn I’ve found - more so there’s no apps really that cater for the Albanian language. We’ve got books etc, but tbh I’m hoping as my 7 year old gets older she’ll have more of an interest of learning, as she has her grandparents and cousins over there , even though now all the kids learn English in Albania!

@Rebekah I've been married almost 4 years and have managed to learn very little. How long did it take you to understand 90% and how did you do it?
