Down syndrome screening

I have had my Down syndrome screening results which has come back as 1 in 404 chance which is totally different to my first born which was about 1 in 50,000. They have explained the chance is still low risk and no further tests are needed but the reason for it being 1 in 404 chance is because I have a raised hormone but everything else is fine and nothing else suggests Down syndrome, but I am still concerned as 1 in 50,000 with my first born and now 1 in 404 is a big jump and really unsettled my mind! Has anyone else had something similar and how reliable is the screening for Down syndrome?

Very similar, not as low as yours but ours is 1 in 5000, it's so scary when they tell you not to worry :( xx

@Emilie mine is also 1 in 5000 but I thought this was low still, my daughter was 1 in 10,000 so was worried why it was lower this time

@Chantelle it's hard too as they give no explanation. This is my first so I have no clue and trying not to worry xx

@Emilie they told me it was a low chance so I’ve not really worried as much 😊 also the 12 week scan had normal nuchal translucency level also. My daughter was 1 in 10,000 but at her 20 week scan she had a heart problem that was common in Down syndrome babies but she didn’t have it it’s such a worry though.. I ended up getting a NIPT test for her and the odds were even lower xx

What was your PAPP A? That made someone I know come back a bit more lower than usual! X

If you want extra reassurance you could have a harmony test privately? It’s more accurate than the nhs test.

@Harriet Rose yes I have booked the test and having it done this evening it’s a lot of money but worth it to know x

Just got mine today and its 1 in 5000. BUT that was from a different type of test called a QUAD blood test that tests for Downs only. I wont know about E or P this time around as I was too far gone at my 13 week scan 🤷🏼‍♀️

I had this same feeling for my number in the 300's and I spoke to my midwife about it. We were saying if I just got the low risk letter and not the sheet with all of the numbers I wouldn't be thinking the same. There's a reason we're still low risk, 1 in 400 is a 99.75% chance the baby doesn't have down syndrome. Hope this helps a bit?

Shit, just got mine through and downs is 1 in 219!!! Should I be concerned? I feel it 😬😥

Ok so looking into this further, our risk is 0.54% of baby having downs with I consider pretty low (1 in 219) The NT measurement was 1.9 at 12 week scan which is well within the normal range. Sonographer didn’t note anything unusual in the scan which is reassuring We can see from the baby scan the nose is pretty prominent, I don’t think this would be the case with a downs baby. The ‘average’ risk for a woman of 37 is 1 in 224 and 39 is 1 in 136 - I’m 38 so my results are actually lower than these standard stats Lastly we are ivf and used a 5aa embryo, this is the highest grading they will use which means the egg was fully fertilised and the sperm good quality. Typically downs occurs in issues with the egg and whilst we didn’t do genetic testing on the embryos, but it was such a good grading that we feel pretty confident now. Last night was a worry, not gonna lie, but feeling much better now with all of these things combined. Hope everyone else is too x

@Georgina that’s what mine was, I think anything over 0.5 is fine :) x
