When would you allow cats to sleep in same bedroom as baby?

I have two male cats and one female cat, and a 5 month old baby. Baby and I sleep in a bedroom with the door closed and my partner sleeps downstairs with the cats. The male cats are not too fussed about the baby but the female cat is more interested and I think she might be jealous? When baby is on the bed she jumps straight by her. Also she normally steps on us to get to wherever she wants to go so I’m worried she’ll step on baby. When did you let your cats sleep in the same room as baby? What precautions did you take? We would like to transition to one big happy family again as opposed to different rooms.

I wouldn't advise letting cats sleep in same room as baby till their old enough to move the cat of them

Not until baby can move cat themselves

I personally wouldn’t ever allow pets in a baby or child’s room. Not until after 4-6 when they’re in an open bed and can get out safely or have the communication to verbalise somethings wrong/push cats off. Is there a reason your partner can’t sleep in the room with you and baby with door closed? X

Thank you all. Baby and I bedshare in a small double so it’s very tight with my boyfriend in it, plus we feel really bad for the cats who always slept with us until baby arrived, that’s why he sleeps downstairs right now. Maybe I should buy a queen bed for everyone to have their space 😂

I’m not sure we put our daughter in her own room at 7 months and all was fine, now she’s almost 2 and my cat doesn’t really go near her and steps on us but steps over her xx

I also havnt considered this but I have two cats. Female is very much a quiet loner cat. She’s always in her spot and doesn’t like much attention or stroking. Male cat sleeps on my time to time (my legs) but never my face or head so I imagine they wouldn’t sleep on a baby’s head ?

We let ours in but she's 20 years old, has arthritis and can't jump anymore so there's no way she can get into baby's crib. I've seen these net things you can put over the crib though that look good. You could try something like that?

I wouldn’t leave any pets alone with a baby, ever.

@Sarah I don't think OP has said they would be alone?

Overnight=never. If I’m awake and in the room then the cats are allowed in. But I’d never ever let them alone over night while I sleep in the other room, they could get on her and suffocate her/ attack her. Would be out of their character but it’s not worth chancing.

@Rebecca ah fair enough. Misread. Still probably wouldn’t as if parents are asleep anything could happen before you wake up. My pets aren’t allowed upstairs anyway.

My cats have slept in our bedroom their whole lives and continue to do so since my LO came home from hospital! They’ve never once gone near her during the night (they’re too wary of her sporadic movements haha)! We didn’t want them to feel pushed out and resent her (if it can get that deep with cats 🤷🏻‍♀️😂)

One of my cats sleeps in the bedroom with us, but he’s not interested in us or the baby. We let him upstairs since our dog started chasing him out of the house in the middle of the night. He will sometimes have a snuggle while the lights are still on but then he just goes on the floor or the windowsill. He used to try to go into the cot, while baby wasn’t in it, but we trained him not to and he’s not even interested in it anymore. My other cat on the other hand sleeps downstairs with the dog because he is always all over us in the bed and I just don’t wanna risk it. The dog doesn’t seem bothered by him so everyone is happy sleeping in a nice warm house z

We’ve never shut our cat out, he sleeps by my feet like he always has and baby sleeps in the next to me or between me and my partner. Cat is not that fussed by him just gives him a sniff every now and again, he would get in the cot before baby arrived but I’ve not seen him in there since

We’ve never had cats interested in sleeping with us or my children until we bought our kitten a few months ago. My children are 10, 6 & 4 and as much as they love her they don’t like her on their room at night as she bites their toes and ears 😂 so she sleeps with us. I would say from birth until 2 is where I’d never allow it.

It’s difficult and think very different for cats than most dogs. Though both could be unexpectedly unpredictable if grabbed/rolled into while sleeping with baby. Dogs are easier to “control” I suppose. Mine have always been in same room as baby but they can’t jump into a cot the same way a cat would.. I’ve seen nets to go over crib which is probably a good idea if you want to be in the same room as I personally wouldn’t allow my dog or cat in the same sleeping space as a child until 5/6 years old at the very earliest. As I say animals can be unprectiable if touched when sleeping. For me, I wouldn’t be letting them till much older than that either x

When I had my cat with my eldest I swear she thought she was his mum, had to be there every minute of the day. Used to be an outside cat only ever came in at night but when baby came she never wanted to go out. She would lay on my bed at the side of his moses basket or cot or lie underneath it. If he was on the sofa or I was holding him, she would be sat at the side of him. Never had any issues with her trying to lie on him, until he was about 8 months and I came back in from the kitchen to find her snuggled up asleep on his knees in his bouncer with him sat stroking her x

I let my cats sleep in the bedroom from the start ( my LG is in my room still, if she was in her own room I’d shut the door) they’ve never tried to get into the cot with her, they keep their distance. They had always slept in my room and would cry and scratch at the door if I shut them out which would be too stressful for me and them and stop the baby from sleeping x

My cats only shared from 18 months plus x

i have 2 cats and they did sleep in the room with us a few times but one of the cats kept going into the crib so i stopped them coming in overnight. My Daughters 1 now in her own room and they aren’t allowed in her room at all, but they sleep in ours or on the sofa lol
