You get taxed for SMP!!

I'm not sure if anyone else knew but I just realised that you get taxed for statutory maternity pay!!! 😱 I am wondering how much those who have applied for SMP will receive after the weekly £172.48 gets taxed 😳 i feel for us mamas, how are we going to survive with these living costs which have risen!?

You shouldn’t get taxed..

I got like 681 a month. I didn’t get taxed only national insurance which was like 8 pound. Hope this helps x

You may get a tax rebate at the end of the year but depends when you go on maternity and what you’ve used of your tax free allowance etc. I won’t pay tax but I work part time so don’t earn enough to pay tax so it’s totally personal to everyone’s circumstance

I never got taxed x

It’s rubbish isn’t it! I think you also get student loan etc deducted too. I’m not holding out hope to get much when I go to SMP (I got a few weeks full pay as part of our policy but I go to SMP next month 😫)

Yep it’s taxed. Idk how and why, but my SMP came to 800£ and I don’t have any extras from work, so I actually expected less 😅 but it’s still not enough obviously, baby expenses alone are close to half of that (and I rarely buy things brand new..)

@Lucy you should not be paying a student loan from SMP??? Give HMRC a call, you mean need to get your tax code amended

Your tax code is exactly the same whilst on SMP as before. So for most people on SMP they won’t hit the £12,570 earnings for the year so won’t pay any tax. But if you are a high earner for the months you have been working in that tax year then you may pay tax. It all depends on your personal earnings.

I actually got a bit of tax back each month.. I think you only get taxed on it if you’ve already earned over the threshold for that financial year

I was taxed for a few months, then got tax back for a few months. Then when the new tax year came around in April I didn’t get taxed on any of my SMP

I was taxed for 4 months but the past 6 I’ve had a rebate. The gov website does say it’s taxable

@Rosie oh that’s something then :)

Yeah, it’s based on your tax code. I was taxed and had deductions for student loan x

@Danielle yeah, I assumed HMRC would come and ask for it all back, but not heard anything yet 🤷🏼‍♀️

I noticed this in my payslip today! Was devastated when I saw over £100 PAYE tax and some NIC too 😥

If you’ve spent your tax allowance before you go off the. You will pay tax, with my last my SMP kicked in in April so I paid no tax on it, it did pay tax on the enhanced pay my company gave me before the normal SMP.

You’ll get taxed depending on your salary and how much you’ve earned the rest of the year - all depends on tax bracket. If over taxed you’ll get a rebate x

No you shouldn’t

I recieved £899 last month and I have no idea why as their was no enhancements and only stat. Has anyone else had the same? I’ve not got any of my payslips to check if it’s tax given back or anything? Xx

I have been taxed since the start, in fact I have done 2.5 days KIT days a month since going onto SMP and I get less than some people are saying above because I’m being taxed so much! How is that even fair, genuinely what kinda fuckery is that! Nothing against individuals but I think the system is MASSIVELY flawed 😩

I got taxed on mine I was on maternity last year but then I got a check come from Hmrc this year with a refund

It will depend on how much you earned in the tax year until you went onto SMP, if it takes the total paid or expected to be paid in that tax year goes above the tax code you're on you'll still pay some tax

Call HMRC. This was happening to me. As I had 2 part time jobs and managed to get 2 lots of SMP. Anyway when I called they reviewed my tax and ended up sending me a rebate 😁. When I ended up leaving my jobs, I was also given another rebate. As I wasn't going to be earning enough to be taxed for the whole tax year.

But... I also opted out to not pay my pension contributions and that's saved me £79 pcm so look into that. My work place you can freeze that during maternity.

I was taxed on my first few wages but as soon as they realised I wasn’t earning enough I got tax back in the following few wages after that

@Amy you will if earned enough over the year!
