When would you tell an employer you’re pregnant if you WFH?

I’m on track to get a promotion and I’m kind of worried if I say something sooner, they might delay my promotion. Yes it’s illegal but you know how it is for women! So, since I WFH, when do you think is the latest I can announce while still having time to prepare for maternity leave? 20 weeks? 28? 12?

I’d look in your employee handbook when you need to notify for leave. That would be your answer. Mine said I needed to notify at least 30 days before I’d be out. I told them when I was 20 weeks along because I knew my position would require a lot of training for the temps. At the end of the day it’s when you’re comfortable with it. 12 weeks always seemed early to me but to each their own!

It depends on how cool your boss is. If you think they would snatch your promotion then absolutely wait until you get that. For me I told my boss the week after I found out because he was so kind. If I had no friendly relationship with my boss I would wait until I started blatantly showing. There’s not much prep that goes into maternity leave besides choosing the dates.

Some employers have requirements of when you have to give them notice. Look that up before making a decision. Is your position going to be hard to fill while you’re on leave ? How much time do you plan to take? If it’s longer than the norm I would give them advanced notice

What other people said- if you have an obligation or requirement in your handbook then that's what you should go with. I told my boss after I found out the gender because I couldn't hide my excitement. He has 8 granddaughters and no grandsons and it's a small family business so he was like "AMAZING! That's what we need, some more boys around here" I told his wife a few weeks before and she said he would be excited because he loves babies. I told my other coworkers first only because I couldn't lift heavy things safely like I used to so they noticed lol

But if you are on track to get a promotion and they like you I would see if I could get it *first* or the pay rate first (like ask for it early) because in NY you get 60% of your weekly pay for maternity leave, so if your employer cares about you genuinely they would want to make that easier on you.

Legally you have to tell them at 25 weeks so I will say around then.

I told my boss pretty early but mainly if worst vase scenario happened in the first trimester I eanted my boss to understand why I would need time off to greive and why i may not be as productive (like my first pregnancy I had a lot of morning sickness so it made it very difficult to work or why i asked for more time). My boss loves babies so it made it easy talking to my boss about it. I need to let HR know 30 days before i wpuld take Mat Leave which i plan to talk about next week or the following.

I haven't told work yet (15 weeks). WFH too. We are in the middle of a couple of projects so I'm waiting before things are a little quieter not to freak people out. I'm down in the office at 19 weeks so I might tell folks then.

I’m currently interviewing for a higher role and feel the same way. I go into the office and my immediate team knows but my bosses do not.

I read somewhere that we have to give them 15 weeks notice. Dk how true that is but I ended up telling them at 20 weeks

@Ema legally where?

It's the law to tell them before the end of the 25th weeks, so 15 weeks before your due date.

@Carmela where is this law at?

Uk law, it's the requirement

I was in a similar position when I first found out I was pregnant with my 2nd. I was interviewing for another position within the same company and it meant that I could relocate too, my current manager at the time was super supportive and said that the pregnancy shouldn’t affect it at all. The manager of the new patch was great too, she ended up offering me the role, and I was fully transparent with her about the pregnancy and when I aimed to leave for mat leave. I only worked in the new role for 3 months before having to leave for mat leave, but I’ll return to it later this year. In my situation, the transparency and being upfront about the pregnancy really helped me. I think I would’ve felt bad if I didn’t tell them until much closer to the time of leaving. They supported me through extra appointments that I needed etc because they knew I was expecting. It’s personal choice how you go about it, but as others have said the legal requirement is to tell them 15 weeks before due date.

@Ema never heard of this and I work in law. My firm is 30 days before being out on leave. They can’t force you to tell them sooner. And my firms an international firm so covers lots of places in the US too

Oh I am in the Uk, I should have said

Oh ok this is the UK. Phew 😅 I was going to say this is so ILLEGAL in the US. In the UK it’s definitely different bc we definitely do not HAVE to tell anything at all for awhile

Here is the section on the gov website https://www.gov.uk/working-when-pregnant-your-rights#:~:text=Telling%20the%20employer%20about%20the,told%20as%20soon%20as%20possible.
