Maternity Pay

Afternoon all, I’m hoping someone can help me out. I’ve just logged onto my work laptop to access my wage slips over the past few months, and I’ve noticed that each month what they pay me, and what they tax me varies quite considerably. For example, one month they taxed me £79 and another month £0 the last two months they have paid me £699 take home, but other months they’ve paid me nearer to £800 I’m really not good with stuff like this, please can someone help me out. Should we even be getting taxed on maternity pay as it’s so little? Thank you!

Are you getting SMP or company maternity pay?

I've also been paid 699 and nearly 800 another month but when I looked it was because there was 5 weeks in that month and SMP is worked out weekly, hopefully yours is the same 😊 x

@CeeCee SMP

@Keira oh really, maybe that’s why then. I just assumed as I’m salary it would be the same each month? Also the tax still doesn’t make sense to me.. sometimes it’s £0 other times it’s £79

I thought mine would be the same too but presume with it being weekly pay it calculated slightly differently to an annual salary. Tbh I've not looked at my tax. Has that perhaps changed since April when the new tax year began and you're not currently earning enough to justify paying tax? 🤔 x

@Keira I think you’re probably right, I didn’t think of any of this lol. Thanks for your help! Xx

I think the tax will be adjusting for the year end. As far as I know tax presumes you will be earning the same wage all through the year so because at the end of the tax year (feb/march etc) your wage was crap the tax should have gone down. But this does depend on how much you got paid the entire year (so normal salary). If you were over allowances you will have still been paying tax. It’s all to do with preventing refunds being needed. When the new tax year started it should have started again so presume you will be on zero or very little tax now. I hope this makes sense xx

@Michelle thank you! Xx

The last few payments I had before April had tax on it of around £70-80 but it wasn’t a deduction it was a rebate which made my take home around the £800 mark. I guess they were adjusting the amounts as I was earning less. After April I went to £0 tax again x
