My baby sucked on a honey pretzel

My mother in law let my son suck on a pretzel and the ingredients say it has honey in it. He is 7 months old. Do I need to be worried?

It's fine. Next problem... haha

As long as he’s not allergic he should be fine. I’ve let my son eat a cheese burger and other “grown people foods”. If you’ve ever looked into BLW (Baby Lead Weening) it helps them transition. For me I’ve always stood on as long as he isn’t allergic and doesn’t choke, try it out👍🏽

Call your pediatrician to be 100% sure! They say that kids shouldn’t have honey until after one bc of how it’s made and the bacteria that is in it think!

You're fine. The scare of honey is botulism which won't be found in cooked honey. Only raw. He'll be okay as long as he's not allergic to something else in there

you’re supposed to stay away from honey until one year because in some cases it can cause infant botulism. I think if he was just sucking on it he should be fine but Just keep an eye on how he’s feeling and call your pediatrician if you’re worried, they’ll probably have a better answer to ease your mind ❤️

@Nicole this is actually inaccurate; the type of botulism that affects infants can't be eliminated by cooking or pasteurization. It has to do with how it's digested. Older children and adults have mechanisms that can defend against Clostridium Botulinum, babies under 1 don't. https://www.webmd.com/baby/when-can-a-baby-have-honey However that said, it's a very minimal risk. The advice is out of an abundance of caution (no one wants to be in that 1%), so you don't want to make a habit of it, but baby will likely be fine.

@Melissa yes for pure honey. Honey in a highly processed snack like a pretzel is not going to carry over botulism. If she had made them from scratch, I'd be concerned. A factory made one where the honey itself is likely not pure honey but honey flavoring - it's exceedingly unlikely. Botulism is a nasty bacteria but it's not only in honey if we're going to get down to the nitty gritty. It's also found in home canned foods as well because they weren't properly canned. It all comes down to how everything was prepped and made. Botulism CANNOT live in an environment that isn't moist. So a no go for pretzels. Another thing botulism needs to live is a low salt environment - again not pretzels. There's no reason to scare her. Botulism isn't on her pretzels.

@Melissa there's no point of debating this over her post and hijacking it. We both answered her concern. Again however, the honey in the pretzels is unlikely to be pure honey (as in not artificial). Even at that it's close to MAYBE a 1/10 tbsp of such for the entire processed batch. I am aware infant botulism is different but in this case I'm not referring to pasteurizing. I'm referring to that fact it is an ULTRA processed food. The chance he will contract anything is incredibly minute.

I mean in this case yes. The pretzel is pretty much a non-issue. But OP should still avoid honey, even processed honey, until 1 year of age just to be safe. The risk actually drops anyway after 6 months, the advice to a year is, again, an abundance of caution. Infants younger than 6 months are at the most risk.
