I work in HR, if your a employee looking to ask your employer to change policy I would say your chance of success depends on the type of company. Large/medium corporate companies will not change policy just because one or even a few people want better, so I wouldn't expect it. If its a small company and they are doing really well and are already looking to improve engagement, retention etc then talk to your manager, HR, directors about the importance of maternity pay on mothers and do a cost analysis of how much extra it would actually be. I.e. if employee A earns £50k and you provide enhanced maternity for 4, 8, 16 weeks it would cost xxxxx. Also explain benefits... more pay during maternity helps mums engagement which helps support them return to work. Also don't think of just that one policy. What about dad's, Paternity pay. They will take u more seriously if you consider family friendly policies as a whole rather than just what you want because your pregnant or are trying. Good luck.
Great advice thank you! I have been Considering suggestions to improve pat leave too. But what you’ve said is really helpful x
