Fly around or Work from Home
Classic Career or family conundrum…
I am finishing up mat leave soon with baby 1 and putting her in full time daycare. I am blessed to have 2 companies I can go back to… BUT can’t decide. What are your thoughts???
My current role, pays 6 figures, I’ve been there for 6 years, and it’s fully remote work from home. The job has slowed down quite a bit and I like the culture, have a nice team of supportive people that love me there, but I’m slightly micromanaged and there’s not much room for growth. The industry itself is not doing great but my role is fairly stable, and fully remote so would make it easy with the kid.
Conversely, I am at the final interview stage for a new hybrid in office/ from home role in a different industry. The industry is taking off and this would be a critical, higher paid position to build out something new. The travel requirement is 20% so I would fly around the USA, and even to South America about once a month. They say they believe in work life balance and the industry is taking off, would be a huge career opportunity.
My husband also works 80 hour weeks so will not be able to help with childcare when I’m gone, I’ll need to drive 3 hours to my parents city to leave them to take care of baby then fly out of there or hire a nanny.
Lastly we want to try for another kid soon so I would have a lot of pressure to make my mark on the new org within 1.5 years before going on another mat leave.
I just don’t know what to do yet and it feels like a crossroads between career and family… this season of life is crazy I tell you!
Do I embrace the craziness and risks and insanity of being the super career mommy that I have an opportunity for, or do I keep things chill and slow and wait for a few years before jumping on the bucking horse??
I’d stick with your current work from home job yeah the other role may be higher paid but is it really going to be worth the 3 hour travel to drop your child off with grandparents
