Payment for KIT days

Posting in case this helps anyone else out… I know it’s early but we are just trying to work out finances. Does anyone have any experience with Keeping in Touch ‘KIT’ days? My employer has said any KIT days I do whilst on mat leave won’t be paid until after I return to work in my first pay packet. This not only seems harsh but seems to go against advice a friend pointed me to online on the maternity action website. https://maternityaction.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/KIT-2019.pdf I’ve raised it with my employer but have yet to get a response. Does anyone have any experience of this?

Yes I have experience with KIT days and the advice you’ve got is correct, they must be paid in the following pay run after being worked. They can’t hold out for several months to pay you. However if you receive any paid maternity leave from your company then KIT days wouldn’t be paid unless they are in the period with no payment. I wonder if this is potentially the point of confusion. Maybe not. So for example I receive 6 months paid maternity leave, so if I did a KIT day during that period, I wouldn’t be paid because I’m already being paid my full wage. However if I work a KIT in the last 6 months, then I would be due payment in the following months payroll (possibly months 7-9 would be slightly reduced due to stat payment but would be topped up to full pay for those days worked). I need to have the day agreed with my manager and then just inform HR of the days worked. Last time I did KIT days in months 10-12 so were paid in full in each pay run.

Same as above for me. Only difference I had to complete a timesheet and then once that was approved I got paid in my next pay. So I could request them all at once or split them out and divide up when I got paid for them.

Thanks both, the response from my employer was that the maternity action website states “my employer has asked me to work KIT days” whereas my employer says KIT days as per our mat policy (and I thought everywhere) are an employees choice to complete, hence why they can delay payment as they are optional and we aren’t being asked. At a loss of where to go next with it so tbh think I will just let it go and complete my KIT days at the very end of my MAT leave. Frustrating to say the least from an already unsupportive employer..

I think that is so poor! My KIT days are optional, I don’t think there is such a thing as mandatory days. If it was outside of my enhanced period, I’d be paid the following month. I can’t imagine why a company would want to delay you payment so much even if they could do this which still sounds very odd. If you work and are due payment, they should just pay you! Sorry they are being this way.
