Most insurances cover pregnancy as a basic. If you have any complications in your pregnancy then you’d need to declare those as pre-existing conditions. You won’t need a fit to fly x
I always carry a fit to fly, I’m going away tomorrow and I have one printed and packed. I’ve been stopped by Qatar and BA staff overseas returning to the uk over it, so it’s worth having one. Yeah, most insurances cover you for incidents that may trigger labour but not spontaneous labour costs.
I was 8 weeks when we went away (but was supposed to be 28w when I arranged travel insurance but miscarried) and Direct Line said I didn't have to declare it and it's covered provided health professionals hadn't told me not to go. I don't know if they offer more/better than other insurance companies but out of 3 insurance companies I've dealt with for car insurance they were by far the best/quickest so that's why I went through them. I know a fit to fly isn't needed for those weeks but I had planned to get one if I could just incase, even if it was a note in my folder from the midwife.
Basic insurance should cover you, but I have fibroids and a low placenta so classed as high risk and had to get special insurance. Depending how much you’re showing it might be worth getting a fit to fly note regardless. My midwife was happy to do one when I last went away at 18 weeks because I looked quite big already. They said some airlines if they think you look pregnant may ask for one regardless of how many weeks you say you are x
@Kayleigh I got a note from my midwife when I went to Seychelles at 26/28 weeks. Emirates are VERY strict and I wouldn’t have got far without it as I was… rather large 😂 Level of cover required really depends on where you are travelling to. I made sure mine covered medical repatriation as I didn’t want to be stuck out in the Seychelles should something had happened x
Thanks everyone really helpful advice 🥰 My hospital midwife said a fit to fly is sometimes hard to get and my midwife might not be able to give me one. I’ll definitely get one, one way or another lol
Insurance companies aren’t allowed to discriminate due to pregnancy, the only time you aren’t covered is if you are near due date. If you go into labour at 23/24 weeks it will be due to something else which will be covered, not classed as spontaneous. You don’t need a fit to fly as in the unfortunate event that you did need to make a claim, they’d access your medical records and see that you were not high risk/advised not to travel.
So basically what I found out is if you went into spontaneous labour you are not covered with ANY insurance policy however if you had an accident which meant you went into labour or needed an emergency c section then you are covered. You won’t need a fit to fly at that many weeks.
