Parenting vs.Work

Hey Moms! I could really use some advice and support from those of you juggling work and parenting right now. Are any of you working or working from home? What do you do, and how do you manage it with little ones? I’ve been on the hunt for a part-time job for the last couple of months but haven’t had much luck. Nursery costs are sky-high, so I’ve decided to keep my little one at home with me for now. But my original plan to start working again just hasn’t come together. My background is in graphic design, and I also have seven years of experience as a brow/lash expert. If you’re in a similar situation, please tell me your story! I’d love to hear how you make it work, what kinds of jobs have been doable with kids at home, and any ideas or recommendations for legit remote jobs. It’s overwhelming trying to sift through all the scams out there.

I'm self employed and work from home. The only way I am managing is because my husband is also self employed as a personal trainer so when he isn't working (mainly during the day as he is mostly busy early mornings, evenings and Saturdays) , he looks after baby. (I'll just breastfeed and some other things when I need to).. My background is fashion design which I do some freelance work in and I also have my own handmade business which I am having to rethink as the amount I was doing pre-baby will no longer be possible. I also have some other small businesses that i manage all online. I get some of my fashion work via peopleperhour.com, that's really good for graphic design, same as Upwork. Do you have an online portfolio, social media, LinkedIn etc where you can show your work. Have you heard of Print on Demand? You can place artwork onto all sorts of things like clothing, mugs, calendars etc...look it up. Perfect for your speciality in graphic design. So much you can do with this skill!!

Brow/lashes is also an amazing skill but I guess you would struggle a lot with appointments etc... Although have you looked into the funded childcare hours? I haven't looked into it yet as my husband and I can manage at the moment but could that be an option?

Yes, I tried to work through Upwork, but they pay too little for the work + I need to pay a commission. Thanks for the link, I will definitely check on this site. I have a portfolio, and I mostly worked as a freelancer, but now AI has almost taken our place, it is very difficult to find a job 🙈

@Clara yes, mostly I struggle with appointments🙈 As for the free hours, we had 15 of them, but of course it's not free, we paid £360 every month, so after 2 months we decided to terminate the nursery , as I couldn't find a job. My son really liked the nursery and I feel terrible about it.

Yeah there is a lot of AI around now but I do believe people still need graphic designers. What about thinking of other ways to do graphic design that is relevant to trends such as creating a social media package etc... I mean it will take some time to get all these elements in place though. There's so much I wish I had done/prepared before giving birth! You can also sell graphic packages on etsy, creative fabrica etc but there's a lot of competition. When you worked as a freelancer, could you get back in touch with previous clients?

What do you mean that the free hours weren't actually free? Really?!

I just applied for it to understand it a little more (kept meaning to do it), I understand what you mean now so disregard my above comment 🌸

@Clara Nowadays, there are many competitors in every field, and it is difficult to stand out. Especially beauty and graphic design fields 😅 I have already thought about contacting my previous clients, but if they haven't contacted me yet, then they probably have nothing to offer me 😅 because all my clients have been happy with the work I have done and I try to always maintain good relationships with them and tell that they can always contact me. Who knows, maybe it's because there are so many free programs out there that anyone can design on their own😅

@Clara from 3 years old it's much cheaper because 30 hours are free... You just pay a fee and it depends on the nursery, for example from next year we will have to pay around £100 a month and it will be noticeable in terms of finances😅
