Self feeding with hands

We started weaning our now 7 month old when he was 6 months by doing a combination of spoon feeding and offering finger foods and preloaded spoons. He took on really well to accepting preloaded spoons and feeding himself but wouldn’t touch any food with his hands if placed on his plate or tray. I would really love to encourage him to use his fingers more to pick up food and try it.. any hints or tips? Is it possible that I have confused him by giving spoons and finger food together?

@Emma that sitting in a tray 👌🏽 where’s that from ?? + in the nappy! Good idea. The bloody stains on her outfits 🫣

@@Emmaare you confident they can sit like this and it doesn’t increase chocking hazard?

@Maria she sits upright when bring food to her mouth, she was just leaning forward to grab the peas. Furthermore, peas do not need to modified when given in BLW as they are smaller than a babies airway. I’m also sat next to her supervising. The risk of choking is never 0, in either traditional purée or BL weaning. It’s about ensuring the environment and food is modified to create a successful meal time. A lot of the time ‘picnic’ style eating can be a good way for food to be introduced, as they’re not restricted in their high chair, and can make it a more enjoyable experience, with less pressure to “eat”. @Hayley the tray is from Amazon, and when there’s mash involved it’s definitely a nappy dinner!

@Emma I’ve never seen one before! We don’t have the space + i hadn’t considered choking as mentioned above 🥣🍽️

@Emma I’m guilty for the floor seat 😬 And I’ve worked in nurseries (a lifetime ago tho!!!! 20 years!)

@Emma yes, I completely agree the choking risk is never 0. I guess it depends if the baby is not a fan of high chair. Our meal time takes about 45-1h because we do cards and other activities as we eat and do pauses and occasionally she treats it as a play time. Whatever makes your little one happy and you confident!! I am very panicky when it comes to gagging and although it doesn’t stop me offering some foods for her, I do prefer having her completely upright with little opportunity to move around

@Maria elsie is a fan of her highchair as she regularly has her evening meal in her highchair at the same time that we eat to create a family atmosphere. However, when introducing her to new food or new textures I like it to have it picnic style so that it’s more of a play opportunity and she’s not as restricted it’s definitely what works for your baby what you should do.
