The recommendation is 6 months but you can start as early as 4 months IF baby can sit up by themselves **unassisted**. I do see a lot of people not following guidelines about a lot of things lately and it's concerning. It wasn't this way 4 years ago. Obviously it's different if a doctor is making them do things differently (my baby needs to tummy sleep and might need to eat sooner due to a health issue), but it seems a lot of it is social media misinformation related or some level of ignorance.
Literally came from my littles 4 month check up today, that turned 4 months yesterday and he said I could start with 1-2 tablespoons of cereal for iron. Apparently ebf babies need a little extra help with iron. He even said I could add apple sauce.
We do baby led weaning and skip purées but solids are recommended until 6 months and baby can sit mostly unassisted and no longer has their tongue thrust reflex - which usually both happen around 6 months. Their little guts aren’t quite ready at 4 months. And cereal is basically filler - it has little to no nutritional value. Pedis aren’t trained in baby nutrition/diets. Check out the AAP recommendations for starting solids. ❤️
I’m waiting :)
4.5 months old I started him on baby cereal last week. Only once in the evening, but I’ll try twice a day next week and a fruit
My pediatrician said to wait until she can sit by herself or to wait til 6mo but tbh sometimes I give her a little bit of what I’m eating just so she can get a taste of it. If I have mashed potatoes I’ll make her try a tiny piece, or if I’m eating oat meal I’ll make her try a tiny bit just to see her reaction. Today I let her lick a piece of a banana and i just love seeing her reaction to new flavors. She’s not really interested in starting solids yet so this is just for fun.
I also thought 6 months but at my LOs 4 month appt on Monday his pediatrician said we can start now (if we wanted to) and gave us a form about it. We are in no rush to start him yet unless we need to.
