Maternity pay

Does anyone know if there's a way to calculate maternity pay after tax? Will it be taxed / NI / Pension? I know it's £184 p/w but it would be helpful to know if there will be deductions..

If you ask HR at your work they may be able to do a forecast of what your payments will look like. It also depends on when you go on maternity in the tax year

I've just asked my work for a breakdown of what to expect whilst on maternity xx

@Jade let me know if they give a forecast. I need to ask my work as my maternity starts in the new tax year and don’t want them to mess it up x

@Chloe I know that's the issue 😬 but hopefully they don't 🤞 I've asked for my maternity to start on the 31st March, so hopefully it makes it easier for them 😅 but i would assume that they should xx

@Jade if they don’t give you one there is a SMP calculator online but it won’t include if your work give you full pay for a set period of time. Can get an idea of the amount you’ll earn and whether you’ll be under the tax allowance x

Thanks..I do get full pay for a set number of weeks so I'm predicting that the tax will be deducted from smp and likely a tax refund later on

The thing I’m worried about you won’t get a refund on NI or pension contributions so if the company can do a forecast they’ll get the tax codes right x

So I’ve read online and tax codes are usually cumulative so once your pay drops to SMP (£184/ week) the tax should stop :)

@Chloe that would be great. I've informed HR well in advance so hoping to get the Mat form to them and it will all be processed on time.

You don’t get taxed on stat pay :) this is including keep in touch days xx

@Natalie what about the first 6 weeks at 90% of pay?

Mine varied between 718 and 780 in the bank once on stat mat pay. I still had pension deducted but think you could opt out if you wanted to.
