Glucose test

Help!! We’ll ease my mind a little. I’ve heard so many mixed feelings about the glucose test. I got the fruit punch and my test is Thursday . Should I have asked for a healthier or “safer” alternative ?

They both have the same effect.

Do you mean a different flavor or ask for an alternative to the drink completely?

You and baby still be fine.

I was kind of scared for mine too! But there is no other alternative that is even close to as effective.

I was worried about the same thing and asked my MFM doc. She said “if you have the occasional canned soda it’s pretty much the same level of unhealthiness,” just opt for the dye-free one if it’s available. Otherwise there’s a thing called “The Fresh Test” that you can order online that seems to be accepted by most offices as an alternative. I ended up drinking the dye free orange flavor and haven’t had any issues

I opted for the blood glucose test at home where i can prick my own blood after I wake up and an hour after every meal log each blood glucose amount. No need to consume anything gross

There is a safer alternative. You can use a different drink that had 50g of glucose or do the finger prick for a week. It’s worth researching and you can always ask your OB what options they have or decline it if you have no history of diabetes or GD or family history of it.

Is it concern over the flavor or food coloring? Tbh I have only done the glucose test with the lemon-lime flavor and it was fine for both previous pregnancies. I have my glucose test coming up for baby 3 next week and will be sticking with the same thing since that flavor wasn’t the worst imo (think flat, syrupy Sprite). The glucose test mostly really sucks for the fasting part imo

@Temperance I fasted but every doctors office is different

@Temperance it can definitely vary by provider. Recommendations are all over the place. Thankfully it’s about 2.5 hours minimum fasting time beforehand with my provider, but that feels like a lifetime first thing in the morning.

@Temperance it’s miserable ☹️ I am so with you. Definitely had snacks packed and ready to dig in as soon as that appointment was over

It’s just sugar water and the lemon lime flavor is clear with no colors. You have to have 50g of sugar either way so any other “healthier” alternative isn’t much different because it has the same amount of sugar content.

In what way is a one-time drink served by and in a doctor's office while being monitored considered "unsafe"? Sounds like wooey fear-mongering, but if there's actual science suggesting it's problematic I'm open to hearing about it.

Just read a lot about the health aspect of it , idk if it was dyes they were talking about or what.

@Jaime the lime flavor i had was a clear liquid. no dyes.

The only alternative are the flavors

Did anyone feel sick after drinking it ?

@Jaime no more than if I fasted then chugged a flat soda. Just had water and some snacks ready for afterwards. Felt totally fine!

I feel like you are overthinking a one time drink, ruling out gestational diabetes and all of the complications that can come with it versus the one time amount of sugar, the dyes, the flavor, the nausea you may feel, like none of that should surpass wanting to rule out gestational diabetes. This is standard of care and an easy test, there is nothing you need to be worried about.

Nope I felt totally fine! Tasted like a melted popsicle to me and I drank it easily, it’s a small amount of liquid really,

I did the fruit punch. It’s just a clear drink. I got it done on Friday and got my results back yesterday. I got an 88

@Kelly maybe I am overthinking and of course the complications GD can come with is more important than the one time drink. my diet and exercise is helping me calm those nerves though .

I’m sure your GP is not going to give you anything that will harm your baby!

It's honestly not bad I just did it on Thursday. But after 1 hour I did get hot and itchy. I also had the fruit punch. Just refrigerate it and chugggg!
