Anyone else fail their glucose test?

I had mine today and I honestly feel miserable now. I have the worst migraine ever. I didn’t expect to fail because I haven’t been eating unhealthy and due to nausea I usually only eat two meals a day. Not quite sure what to do any advise?

Hey mama! So sorry to hear that. I hate that test. They’ll most likely refer you to a nutritionist and gestational diabetes doctor to see the best steps for you. I opted out of the test and am doing something else. You can ask to do the fresh test! That’s an better alternative. Your diabetes can be diet controlled if it’s mild if it’s not then you’ll go on medication. You’ll need to prick your finger after every meal and before you eat in the mornings. They usually give you a nutrition journal to keep track of what you eat and you blood sugar. Sending love. Lmk if you have any other questions!

I failed with my first. Low carb - sugar free diet ❤️ And don’t worry it’s not you, it’s the placenta that’s made by dad ❤️

Did you fail the one hour or 3?

I failed the one hour and three hour test and had gestational diabetes. I was upset at first especially when I have cravings. But in the long run, it helped me not gain so much weight and when I gave birth within a few days my tummy was back to normal. Also the diet I was on wasn’t terrible, most of the time I was eating steak and veggies.

I failed my one hour (by a lot) and was miserable after the test. I couldn't function the rest of the day. I passed my three hour and wasn't diagnosed. Remember that GD isn't your fault and happens to even the healthiest of eaters. It can be easily managed!

So i decided to decline mine Not sure what the real benefit of doing it is but my doctor was really upset about the fact that I didn’t want to do it. He also mentioned that I didn’t want a healthy baby which that’s not the case. I am obviously what you consider overweight and I just feel like it’s obvious that some things are gonna pop up and some things are not gonna always be 100% I’m giving 50% of my body to my baby to survive and I think that is completely normal, I just don’t know what the issue was that I wouldn’t take it would’ve been if somebody can explain if it was the right or wrong decision to do that would help a lot thank you.

@Emely well if you need medicine to control GD and don’t take it that can be dangerous for you and baby. You may need to also have it diet controlled. You have options besides taking this test though. I highly suggest doing what I’m going to do which is taking a blood monitor machine and pricking your finger. Once when you wake up before eating, an hour after you eat, an hour after lunch, and an hour after dinner. I suggest also before going to bed. Write down the food you ate, the blood sugar level, and the times. Do that for two weeks straight. Then consult the info with your doctor. You can also take a “fresh test” is a better alternative to those gross drinks they make you chug in the lab. You should definitely monitor especially if there’s a risk like having diabetes in the family or being overweight.

@Emely the test is around 24 weeks though so you’re still early. I’m only 20 weeks and haven’t talked about it yet.

@Kianna that’s my issue. I don’t have history of having it. I don’t take medication for it. It’s not in my family history. My family history has breast cancer. I don’t even have a high cholesterol. I eat pretty healthy for the overall of my weight. I’ve always been a chunky girl. It’s never been the issue. In a way I feel like I’m just being targeted for my weight and not so much for a real like health concern. I feel like it’s just all based off of assumptions now.

@Emely so it’s gestational diabetes. It’s not about whether you took medication for it or not. I’m super skinny I only like salads and eat super balanced yet had it with my first pregnancy. Everybody gets tested for it regardless of weight. You’re not being targeted. It can be super dangerous and let’s say you end up having it and it’s not monitored.. it will stay with you even after your pregnancy. If you pass then good, you’re fine. If you don’t then it turns to a high risk pregnancy and will need a bit more monitoring. It’s a precaution because it can be dangerous. It’s more of a placenta thing and your body just not being able to regulate certain things during pregnancy.

@Emely you can message me and I can give you a lot more details and an outline on what’ll happen going forward. I’m 20 weeks pregnant with my second baby.

@Emely gestational diabetes is not genetic. It has nothing to do with type 2 diabetes in that sense. Every single pregnancy simply the fact that you have a placenta puts you at risk for gestational diabetes where your hormones cause blood sugars to go up. The risk is to the baby and whether they will grow properly in the womb. Even if you’ve had kids before or are a ftm, every pregnancy for every woman puts you at risk of gestational diabetes and has nothing to do with your weight or eating habits. Your doctor maybe didn’t explain it properly but it is for the health of the baby and does not reflect you or your health. No one can look at you and say you are at risk for GD because of how you look there’s not enough science to know who is at higher risk other than the fact that you have a placenta. While no one can force you to take the test, I highly suggest monitoring your blood sugars.

@Aurelia Did you fail both the 1 hour and the 3 hour? I’m sure you are doing great and don’t stress yourself out. It’s not your fault. Gestational diabetes occurs because of the hormones in your placenta and not eating habits. Eating protein is key to helping manage blood sugars especially with GD. Especially with every carb. If you have a lot of nausea, sometimes it helps to have small snacks throughout the day rather than full meals. And specifically for GD, a protein rich bedtime snack really helps. Not every case, but sometimes the nausea is because of your blood sugars being out of range, especially in the morning. I wouldn’t be surprised if nausea symptoms improved a little if you are able to watch and control the gestational diabetes.

Just wanted to thank everyone for the responses. I went today to have my 3 hour glucose test and they actually ended up not being able to do it. Long story short I’m allergic to citrus and they claim they only have lemon, lime, and orange. They actually told me I’d have to order my own glucose drinks for $46 each. I was pretty upset by that cause allergies aren’t something I you can control it’s not like I simply didn’t want the flavors they had. I eventually got told that because I failed my first test and gained over 20 pounds this pregnancy so far that that was enough to diagnose me. They did the test super last min at my last OB appointment because they forgot to do it and actually for some reason thought they already tested me. I wasn’t fasting because I had no idea they’d do it at my last appointment. Long story short they had me pick up a test kit and I’ll be pricking myself 4 times a day every day. I’m pretty bummed but it’s okay I’ll get through it. @Kianna @Autumn

@Aurelia Awh im sorry mamá. Those flavorings are so troubling. I do the pro king method and honestly it’s annoying, but you got this. It’ll be over soon. I had GD with my first. Again, feel free to message me 🫶🏼 although sounds like your ob was being irresponsible by just scheduling an immediate test with no instructions or anything. I’m sorry :(
