Birth Plan

Just entered 30th week on my pregnancy and at my last appointment my midwife advised to start putting the birth plan.. I have got no clue what a birth plan actually means and how does it help ?

There's a template on the NHS website. I'd also think of it as flexible advice. In the moment so much can change.

@popthatmomma on Instagram has a really great template for a birth plan that you can download for free. She provides two example plans alongside the template and a guide to help you decide what you can add. At my most recent NCT class they advised to print out a few copies to bring with you so that each person who is helping you during labour knows your preferences. Hope that helps!

Birth plan is just about what you want before/during/after birth. Examples would be do you care if there’s nursing students in the room with you to observe, so you want the daddy or someone to clamp the chord, who do you want in the birthing room at time of pushing, visitors or none after birth. That way you have it written down instead of them constantly asking you questions of what you want, it’s already on a paper and the nurses know what to allow and not allow. Lots of good templets on google to have as a guide.

Focus on after you have given birth.. your actual labour will just happen how it happens don’t get your hopes up for getting exactly what you want! X

It's just how you want to give birth. Do you want water, or pain meds. Do you want Dad there and or someone else, any music or comforts for you? That sort of thing. You can use templates but don't get too attached to the plan, it could change in an instant, not necessarily for the worst but you might labour really quick and not have the chance to get everything set up or done like pain meds etc. you might need more intervention but it just helps the staff know how what you are wanting as well as family if you need something from them as well.
