weaning

my baby is 6 months old but has been eating purees since christmas day, i was just wondering what signs there is or how to slowly build them up to eating more solid foods? i buy her the ella’s kitchen pouches as i tried to make my own purees before but they tasted gross and baby literally choked and gagged on them so bad, (didn’t realise i was that bad of a cook😂) but she doesn’t do that with the pouches, hence why for now we are sticking to pouches. so how do i thicken food pouches and start getting her used to different textures and thicknesses x

Whatever you have for dinner blend that and each couple of weeks make it lumpier each time, I also offer a finger food with each meal. If you really want to carry on with the pouches as they go up in ages they get thicker and lumpier x

Have you tried the lumpy ones? You can get purées that have lumps and chunks in them, so your baby can start learning how to chew. Also, melty sticks! They’re hand held and they need chewing but they melt into mush in their mouth so they’re good for teaching them how to chew and guide things to their mouths while also being easy to swallow. If your baby is doing really well with purées they should be okay with more solid foods :)

You can thicken any puree with baby rice or I like crumbling a Farleys rusk into the fruit purees. I also mash a banana or add yoghurt or baby porridge to make fruit purees a bit more substantial. Or as others have said just buy pouches for increasing ages (eg Ella's do 7mo and 10mo ones I think as a follow on to the initial ones) and they become chunkier rather than thicker. It took a while for my LG to accept the chunkier lumpier textures, and I was guided by her. I think she was about 8mo before she'd accept any puree with lumps. I added some finger foods alongside purees- solid starts app is helpful for finding out how to prepare food for relevant ages and you can do this from 6mo too. I think getting used to this is what made her happier with chunkier purees. Eg brocoli trees, scrambled egg, toast, and melty sticks are some of the things she likes the best.

Babies will choke and gag on more lumpier textures and more solid food. It is totally normal! “If they’re loud and red let them go ahead. If they are silent and blue they need help from you” Introduce lumpier purees/mashes. You can even introduce finger foods to help baby get used to different textures x

@Levi i’m just worried she will choke, had a scare with a homemade puree i know it’s normal for them to gag and choke but yesterday she choked like bad, really worried me, i’ve given her a banana wafer for finger food before and she tried to shove the whole wafer in her mouth and it terrified me 😅

@Rosie what a good phrase!! i will remember that x

@Sophie it’s very catchy and easy to remember! You can always take a baby first aid course if you’re worried about choking x If she’s red and gagging they say to wait about 10 seconds before intervening as babies reflexes should sort it out themselves, hard to sit and watch I know x
