Minced meat

How would you serve minced meat for 8 month old? Also what fat percentage or does it not matter?

I would go for a leaner (lower%) if you can, I have served it mixed with rice/as bolognaise (I tend to smoosh mine up either with my hands or with a spatula as I can’t stand mince looking like worms it really puts me off 🫣 or a meatball/meatloaf type meal you can cut to appropriate size x

I think it depends on how well your 8month old is eating. My first was great eater by 8months we was eating EVERYTHING and I barely had to cut anything up, modify food at all. By this point he was eating what we were. My other son was not so good and probably wouldn’t have eaten it at 8months.

Serve it however you want - usually it’s broken up small enough. I make a bolognese or chilli or something and give it my son as it is (he’s away to turn 8 months). If it’s meatballs depending on how well they’ve stuck together I might just break it up for him so it’s more like a bolognese. If it was a burger for example I’d give him the whole patty or cut into large strips. For babies, fats are essential for their brain and development. Go for 20%

My baby has it in chilli con carne!

Same as Georgina, you should always give the full fat version of everything! I put it in (mild) chilli con carne, or a shepherds / cottage pie x

Bolognaise with pasta, chilli with jacket potato, make it into burger or meatballs, make a curry, shepherds pie.. and I use whatever fat percentage I have so 5% x

Babies need lots of fat for brain development, energy and to help them absorb fat soluble vitamins like A, D, E and K so at this age I would opt for higher fat percentage. I believe that the NHS recommends that you shouldn’t limit the fat intake for babies under two. Fattier beef will also be less dry so it’ll be less of a choking hazard. At that age my baby really enjoyed meatballs, burgers, spaghetti bolognese and cottage pie
