Anyone else a single mum not working/ low income and expecting a baby? I’m quite nervous due to money, worrying if I’m going to be able to get all the necessary things before baby is here

Are you a FTM? There’s a sure start maternity grant you can get £500, but think you need to be on UC

@Bethany yeah I know about that I’m thinking to get the pram set etc with that but it’s just so much shit to buy isn’t it xx

I was a single mum with my son its nit easy but I got most things of of fb market place and was even lucky to find people selling new things cheap on there I was also working x

Second hand as much as you can. And a lot of stuff you really don’t need or won’t use. Pretty much everything I brought my first was secondhand. And I managed to sell a lot on for the same price I brought it for. Things like next to me, bouncers etc they are only in for a few months before they outgrow them. And like I say most stuff you won’t use. You’ll change the baby where you can, no need for a changing table or even a whole nursery set up because they’re in the room with you and it won’t get used. Breastfeeding is free, but I’m sure there will be help if you do decide to formula feed. I got all my baby clothes secondhand in bundles. They mainly live in sleepsuits, you will not be putting on fancy outfits everyday. For safety reasons car seats need to be new. But even prams you can get secondhand. I’m not sure if there is a citizens advice or a benefits contact you could speak to about what you’re entitled to.

@Danielle thank you for all that information it really helped, I will contact citizens advice

Also, new mattresses due to SIDs. But I got a cot and a Snuzpod secondhand and just got a new mattress. Also Amazon does a baby registry and you can get 15% off some items that are eligible (you will see the ones that are). You can buy the stuff yourself it doesn’t need to be a gift.

Look for NCT sales near you, they sell everything for good prices

We got every single thing second hand except car seat and bassinet mattress. All toys , clothes, jumperoo, high chair etc and I’m so glad we did as we’ve been passing everything on to others who need it. You get to a point where you desperate to empty your house of baby crap you’ll do it for free, and hundreds of mums who are 6 months ahead of you are going to want to do the same so buying anything new is a con :) xx

You want get much when you sell second hand if anything so definitely buy second hand. Even pushchairs you can get great deals on marketplace.
