Collecting colostrum

This was my first go of collecting & I’m super pleased with how much I got! Will you be collecting colostrum? ((I’m currently 36 weeks, I used the medela harmony hand pump & was advised by my midwife that this was fine to do so before hand, I ONLY pumped for 10 minutes each breast but did warm breasts up with a hot water bottle first then gently massaged before pumping & lastly the syringes were bought pre sterilised off of Amazon hope this helps))

Did you use a pump or hand express?

That is a lot! Which is great! Did you pump? The recommendation is to hand express only which usually wouldn’t get quite so much especially first time but obviously whatever works for you. Just helpful for others not to compare or worry if they don’t get quite this much. I could only get drops out before my girl and so never harvested any but EBF for just over a year.

Wow that's loads! Well done haha. Did someone give you the go ahead to use a pump? It isn't recommended usually, just to hand express which generally only produces 1ml per side at the start and then you slowly build up

Ok great, if a midwife has said it ok that's perfect. I always viewed it kind of like the raspberry leaf tea where you build up slowly so you don't cause too intense contractions/early labour

What hand pump do u use? I need to harvest mine too am 37wks now! But u got amazing supply

Wow! I am 36 weeks next week so waiting until then then going to try. I didn't do it with my first but had lots of issues getting him to latch because he had tongue tie and I'm having a C-section this time so think it would be good to have some colostrum already on hand just in case. And get in the practice of hand expressing just in case I need to post birth again. Not sure how much I will be able to get out as I'm not leaking at all this time but I am still breastfeeding.

Congrats! That’s a fair bit! I was always terrible at collecting colostrum, lucky if I could get a few drops 😅 been breastfeeding for 4 months though and still lucky if I get 10pms though so think it’s a me problem!

That looks a really good amount, well done! I'm planning on breastfeeding but hadnt planned on collecting in advance. Where did you get the syringes from?x

@Lauren would always speak to your midwife before hand but mine said it was absolutely fine & I used the medela harmony hand pump
