Have a high protein and high fat breakfast in the morning to optimize your body’s ability to metabolize the sugar appropriately. I just had mine this week and made sure to have 2 eggs, sardines, and a piece of toast with butter
I had mine today and am waiting on the result. I will say, I “cheated” in that my husband is a T1D so I checked with his test kit. Judging from that number, I’ll likely fail and also have to do the other test. Leah makes a good recommendation. Fiber rich carbs and lean protein can help stabilize and delay how the body absorbs glucose. That said, I think for the 3 hour test you have to fast for 8 hours. Keep in mind that about 25% of people fail test 1 & failing the first one doesn’t mean you will have the same outcome on the second one. And, if you do, a lot of it will be diet but tracking with a prick test is so helpful. I’ve used my husband’s (he has a CGM now) through pregnancy. Only once did I see my glucose level stay above 140 after an hour and that was after having close to 85 carbs in an hour between a heavy dinner and dessert. Hope this helps!
First pregnancy I failed the 1hr and the 3hr so I then had gestational diabetes. Second pregnancy I barely failed the 1hr then passed the 3hr and didn’t have gestational diabetes. I’m heathy, active, I’m not over weight. It has to do with how the placenta formed don’t be so hard on yourself. But this also shows that you can fail the 1hr and pass the 3hr. All my 4 blood draws for the 3hr were in range. You got this!
Please remember you are at risk for gestational diabetes if you have a placenta, there’s no rhyme or reason why people get it. Some do and some don’t
Yeah eat high protein I had 2 boil eggs and a breakfast burrito with a banana

I passed my first 1 hr test at 16 weeks (the OB wanted me to do an early screening) then failed my second 1 hr test at 24 weeks by one point over the limit. Did the fasted 3 hr test a few days later and passed with all values either on the low end or middle of the scale.
@Emily what happens if you fail 3 hour test?
@Shreya I think that’s when they classify you as having gestational diabetes and you have to log your blood sugar every day or before every meal. I imagine OB will monitor size of baby and your health more closely to ensure the baby isn’t growing too big too fast.
@Amrita I am pending for my 3 hour test and thinking to make dietary change and then have after a week or so
@Shreya If you have a few days before your 3 hour test then I’d definitely up the protein and reduce any sugar intake in the run up to the test. I did the 1hr test on 24th Dec because my OB thought my abdomen was measuring a little big and I failed that by one point so did the 3hr test on 26th Dec and passed with flying colours, although it did mean I had to control myself on Xmas day and couldn’t eat as much fun stuff but it was worth it!
@Amrita mine is too elevated. It’s 156 😞
@Shreya Hopefully you pass the 3hr test but don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t!
I failed both the 1 hour and the 3 hours test, been diagnosed with gd and then they prescribed me the blood sugar monitor, been trying some things to see how it effects my blood sugar levels, get a bag of mozzarella sticks and eat whenever you eat carbs, protein really helps keeping those numbers down, also I avoid carbs at night because otherwise I would have high fasting blood sugar, whole wheat flour instead of white bread really helps but be mindful of the amount. I was feeling so bad this pregnancy, low energy and getting dizzy after meals. Now that I knew and I started looking after my diet, I feel much more energetic. What ever the results were don’t worry, just take it as a wake up call to cut sugar and to start eating less carbs and more healthy for your future🤍

@Shreya you have gestational diabetes if you fail the 3hr. If you fail the 1hr you have to do the 3hr. But the 3hr determines if you have it or not
@Amrita changing your diet before the test won’t change if she’s going to pass or fail the test. The three hour test is fasted and she’s going to drink a sugary drink, regardless. You don’t get gestational diabetes from having a poor diet it’s caused from how the placenta is formed.
It’s really common to fail the one hour because they have the criteria for your blood sugar more strict than it needs to be so they can actually catch people that might potentially have gestational diabetes. The three hour test has more standard ranges and that’s why that one can actually tell you if you have it because it’s more extensive since it’s over hours.
So, a follow up to my comment - I failed the 1 hour and will do the 3 hour Thursday. Since the 1 hour, I’ve tracked my glucose with a finger prick. Fasting and one hour after meals. It’s only been 2 days plus this morning, but my blood sugar has been in a completely normal range (eating what I normally do). Sharing this for some optimism that, even if test 2 is a fail, don’t just jump to conclusion that your blood sugar will be all over the place. There are ways to manage it. As others point out - it’s the placenta’s fault, not something we did. And you’re drinking a large amount of glucose and then just sitting there without a way for your body to burn it. If you don’t pass, just continue to keep a healthy diet and some exercise to stay within whatever targets the doctor determines. I’m trying to start this mindset now in case I end up with GD.
