Divorce

I have decided to proceed with filing for divorce. Can anyone give me an idea of how much it costs and how long it takes?

All fees will vary per attorney and court filing fees. I'm in Illinois, and one attorney charges a $5000 retainers and $500 per hour. Another attorney can charge $1200 retainer and $250 per hour. You also have to pay the attorney and courts to file your divorce papers. The time frame can vary depending on if they can find an address to serve the other party, how they serve them with court papers or if they contest the divorce. My soon to be ex was serve via social media and the judge has to decide of that is warranted so the time frame can vary tremendously. There was a clerical error that occurred in Nov 2023 but wasn't discovered until April 2024 when my attorney started working on my case.

It also depends if it’s no contest and no fault, what assets you share, custody and visitation is usually separate, and more things. It’s all based on your situation and state.

I’m three months in, about $7500 deep (just on my side), and haven’t even scheduled a mediation date yet. Colorado.

@Kimberly I owe $2,880 for a default divorce because he never showed up to court. Final court date was January 10th and it was finalized on the 17th.
