Were you present during nursery settling days?

My nursery has a policy that you just drop them off and are not there. I find that a bit unsettling, I would like to be there for a few hours, just to get a feel of what it's like, what they do etc. Not to lecture them or anything, but I feel like that's a pretty reasonable ask. Or am I being obnoxious?

No I think that’s pretty normal - to stay. Mine however was only for x2 1.5 hours you got to stay the first one, then second they encouraged to just drop off. However 20 minutes into the first one we left anyways as she was off playing

My nursery had me stay for the first settle which was only an hour long but that was just to complete forms, and provide details of likes and dislikes etc, so I wasn't in the room with him. I had a further x3 2hr sessions, which we were not allowed to stay. They said the settles were for the child and workers to adjust to each other and the parent being in sight wouldn't help

We only had 2 settle sessions. First was 30 mins and we were there but completing forms and the second was 2 hours without us! So not hugely different to what your nursery does x

I stayed for the first cause I had to do forms etc then he was on his own for the second!

Nope. I didn’t stay for either of my children’s settling sessions.

I’m a nursery deputy manager and every nursery I’ve worked in has parents present for the first settle. It’s important that the child has you there the first time they’re in a new place and with new people. They also see you interacting with the nursery staff so can see that you are ok with this new person so they can be too. The next settle can have parents present for a few minutes before saying goodbye and then any settles after that just drop off and go. Of course every child is different so things may have to be adjusted but you should absolutely be present for the first settling session!

We were for the first session but the actual proper settle sessions I stayed in the parent room and did some work so I was on site but not in the room. Main reason for this though is the nursery is a 25min drive so I couldn’t be bothered to go back and forth twice and wanted to be close if he was unsettled. In the eyes of the nursery they can’t really see how the baby will settle if you’re there too do I think it’s normal. See if there’s a cafe nearby and you can phone to check on how it’s going.

We had 3 settle sessions of 1 hour each. First one we were present other 2 we were not

Mine does an hour with parents, an hour without and then I think 2 hours without

Both of ours (2 x 3 hours) we just dropped them off- I preferred that as otherwise we would have no real ‘test’ for either of us to see how it would be! They gave me great updates and wrote down her routine etc before I dropped her off
