Getting kitties to leave baby stuff alone?

T-10 weeks til baby is here and we’re starting to assemble some nursery things. I figured that our cats would end up laying in the swing/bassinet/etc. One concern I now have is what happens when baby gets here? My girl cat has already jumped onto the railing of the baby bassinet and slipped off of it, clawing the mesh and walls to catch herself. Is this something I need to be concerned about when baby gets here or will she know better? Advice on how to get them to leave stuff alone without just separating them from the stuff because that’s not going to be possible when baby is here.

My cat dose the same thing I got a spray bottle to spray him

My cats hung out all over the baby stuff, including naps in her bassinet and bouncer lol, but once the baby got there they completely left everything alone. Baby girl is 2 Mo now and the cats still have no interest in her things. Not sure if your experience will be the same but that's how mine went.

Spray bottle will be needed, honestly now my cats just know if I make the noise or if I shake the bottle I don’t even have to spray it. We use it to for when we eat on the couch and they would beg for food that fixed that too

I just don’t let my cats in any rooms anymore… everytime something comes out of a room they immediately try to destroy it so…

My cats avoid things when the baby is in them. You might want to wash any sheets right before baby arrives but honestly, your baby is going to be exposed to plenty of pet hair. Our stroller bassinet is a favorite nap spot for our two cats.

My cat did the same thing, when baby arrived he was terrified for weeks of the baby and never went near him, slowly but surely he came around but does not go into the bassinet where the baby is. Only issue is if baby is sleeping with me in bed he is a cuddly cat and try’s to cuddle the baby. Maybe yours will leave everything alone when the baby is here?

I now close the door, but before I used to place items inside the crib so she literally could not jump inside when we left the house

They have these net things to deter your cats from jumping in it. But it’s not 100% effective

Lay a sheet of foil in the bassinet

@Miriam yes i definitely plan on washing! I have blankets covering the actual mattress just to avoid soiling for now. I have heard that they know better when baby is here but my girl cat has been hyper aware of my pregnancy and cuddles with my belly every chance she gets so I know she understands what’s happening.

@Katrina we’ve never used spray bottles with our cats before. How long do you think before they will learn instead of getting spiteful? Lol

@KayLee how old are your cats?

@Katrina like 4 or 5 ish. They’re siblings and otherwise pretty well behaved.

@Jodi I am hoping so. I am worried she will try to cuddle with baby when he’s in the bassinet or swing. They are closed out of the bedroom at night so that’s not the concern but day time naps etc I don’t want to close baby or cats away from us

@KayLee do you know what breeds they are? Sorry my sister owns a cat rescue and a lot of the behavior is related to breed

@Katrina I don’t know for sure, they were rescued from a barn. Based on what I’ve looked into they’ve got ragdoll temperament but with short hair and white spotted tabby coloration.

What I did to keep my cat out of the crib, car seat and bassinet before the baby came was to put down some foil..cats hate the sound and sensation on their feet. I put the foil on the rails of the crib. Once the baby came I took it all off and gave our cat a few new hiddy holes around the house. This way she could have more options to feel safe because she is a lover and always on a lap. She stayed away from our LO and her stuff the moment we brought her home. She would sit on her tower on in a hiddy hole and watch the baby but until our daughter was more mobile and could do gentle hands did she really try to interact.

@KayLee ok do you have any closeup pictures of them I could see?

Your cat looks just like mine🤣 I was worried about this too and when she was in it they actually just stayed away. You can get like a mesh cover too that can keep them out but when we brought our daughter home they were confused and weirded out basically at what she was and just kept their distance😅
