I’m a medical assistant, have been for roughly 6 -7 years. Honestly depending on the type of clinic you work at the stress level varies. I’ve worked primary care and podiatry and let me just say that podiatry was easiest (IMO). I did primary care on skid row for a year and a half and it was brutal but totally worth it (IMO). And now I’m a medical scribe which is also very demanding job. You have to really love what you do so it doesn’t feel like a job
@Elizabeth so like a speciality was easier? What do you like/dislike?
I felt it was because it was always the same people that came in and it was trimming nails, cleaning ulcers, taking out ingrown nails things I felt were more simple than primary care with EKGs, injections, Pap smears, breast exams, lab work, giving treatment in office, it’s just more stuff to do.
So it definitely depends on where you work and the dr you work for. So when I first started I did my clinical’s at a cancer center it was pretty slow all I did was take vitals and room pts. After that (during covid) I worked at a covid testing site and I loved that job it was fast paced and also laid back (I know this isn’t much of an option anymore) then I worked at another clinic giving the covid vaccine. This job was too slow and boring so the days were LONGGGG. I left and went to a geriatric clinic but the dr I was working for did pts as young as 18 but she preferred 21 and up. I will say this dr was kinda a pain to work for but my days flew by because I was so busy. I was a float in this office so I switched to working for a PA and it was a little slower because she spent way too long with each pt 🤣 but it wasn’t awful. Then I switched to another dr in that office and she was the sweetest dr ever I would have loved to permanently work for her but I was with a temp agency and my
One year was up so I ended up transferring to an OB clinic. Now I loved the pts but it did have its downfalls it was nice that the focus was on one thing where as with general it’s a little bit of everything. But there some pretty cool procedures we’d do and assist with but the dr was very old school and kinda mean to me (I do think the way she treated me had to do with my preterm labor I was going home crying every day because of how rude she was) but the coworkers were nice it was of course all female so there was the regular drama. But it’s definitely something you’d bounce around a bit to find a place you are comfortable with. But honestly if I was given a do over I would have just gone to nursing school to get better pay and a fast pace job there are some nurses in the clinics and they make so much more doing the same thing we are already doing as an ma 🤦🏻‍♀️ but hope this helps you make the decision 🫶🏼
I know someone who is a medical assistant and they get paid $18 an hour in California. I heard the pay isn’t the greatest but I guess it also depends where you’re located/who you work for.
@Kotah oh definitely because I make $26 as a medical assistant
If you want to message me I can tell you all about it đź‘Ť
