First week of weaning

We’ll be weaning soon, and I’m curious how I should start out. I know eat baby is different and will take to food at their own rate but I see some people doing the first week of weaning by just introducing a singular vegetable, but then others do something that more resembles an actual meal e.g avocado on toast and pancakes and things. I watch a lot of moon and the videos on TikTok and she has a series of “first week of weaning” where she shows example meals and they include a few items for baby to try, introducing allergens and things. But I’m just wondering what’s the best approach for the first week, should I do just a singular item or should I be doing a few things in the plate.

I've started with purees at first, one type of fruit or veggie per week or at least a few days in a row. Sweet Potato, butternut squash. Broccoli, pretty much veggies and fruits to see what he likes. I used the dummies with holes in them to give him berries, easy peelers, just for the taste. Also tried the allergy foods like eggs, bananas, peanut butter. All these videos of "this is what my 6 month old has for breakfast" but they don't actually show the baby eating it. They barely find the hand mouth coordination by then let alone have a avocado toast 🤣 I follow moon on tik tok as well and used somw of her recipes when my son was older than 6 months. I used the nhs site as well. And still use it for some recipes https://www.nhs.uk/start-for-life/baby/recipes-and-meal-ideas/?q=&Baby%27s+age=OR&Baby%27s+age=Around+6+months&Meal+type=OR&Meal+type=First+tastes

Download solid starts that tells you how to prepare food for baby at different ages. Also recommended to start with veggies as they are more bitter than fruit or milk. Remember if you introduce an allergen to do one at a time over a few days so you can see if baby has a reaction. There’s no right way to do it. We’ve done a mix of singular pick up veggies/ purées and adapted meals of what we are eating

What I've learnt since having my son is that everything and i mean everything from changing nappies, food, baths, clothes is all about trial and error😅🤣

I was wondering about this myself because I had read ellas kitchen advice to start with single veggie tastes but seeing all these tiktoks of 6 month olds having a variety of dairy, veggies, fruit, wheat, egg etc which made me feel like I was falling behind a bit to be honest! I checked out moon and rues posts and in the very first BLW meal she has said in the comments that baby had already tried some purees or baby rice or something like that before she started BLW so it's not actually baby's very first experience of food that we're seeing. I found that reassuring to know.

We started with purées but even if I was doing solids I would still only have introduced 1 things at a time. There's no rush, until your child is 1 food is meant to be for fun. Introducing too much at once can overwhelm them. In our first week of weaning my son tried broccoli, cauliflower, peas and carrots. Each one was puréed and offered singularly. I started with the "boring" veggies before offering the sweeter ones like sweet potatoes or sweetcorn etc. Week 2 he tried fruits and slowly he started having more things and introducing it as solids. My little boy is a brilliant eater now. It's scary at first but you get into it

I would start with singular items. You don't know how baby will react to them, not just for allergies, but many babies become constipated or have stomach issues when they start solids, and you want to know what caused it. Don't be intimidated by tik tok. It's not reality. It's ok to start slow. I tried adding more items to the plate after a week or two and I found that my daughter became overwhelmed and frustrated. I scaled back and she did much better with just one food item at a time, we went up to 2 around 8 months.

@Melissa that’s really helpful thank you!
