Amitriptyline

Has anyone been prescribed amitriptyline by a GP during pregnancy? My midwife asked him to for treatment of a pre-existing urinary condition but he told me it’s not safe for pregnancy so refused. Even though NHS website says it’s fine? I feel defeated.

I am taking amitriptyline and I have been my whole pregnancy. I was told it’s safe and not to worry. I take it because I have a condition called interstitial cystitis which is a urinary condition but I take it for pain. I have been told baby may experience a slight withdrawal but it’s rare.

@Ciara This is exactly the same as me!! I had IC really badly about 18 years ago, took ami for years and it went away. Has come back with a vengeance in pregnancy but GP not interested. Said he’d never heard of it and ami wasn’t safe in pregnancy anyway. I tried to push back but he just rolled his eyes when I said I’d read online that it was safe. Thank you so much for your reply x

Can you get an appointment with the urologist? Or ask your midwife to write a referral? GP’s are useless with IC. I had to get a private appointment and then get them to put my prescription on the NHS. But this was years ago before my pregnancy. I really hope you get help, it can be so painful I really feel for you.

@Ciara Midwife is going to ask consultant to ask GP to prescribe it. I will keep pushing back because I can’t live like this. Completely useless - and I feel like male doctors are even worse! Thank you so much for understanding, makes me feel much less alone.
