Someone at work getting paid more for maternity than me

When I was on maternity leave the first month where it’s 90% I got just over a grand but someone I work with (we do the exact same job) is getting £1500 for the first month. That’s so unfair how we literally do the same job, she doesn’t have any other roles just the same as me yet get more in her first month

Have your work explained why? Did she negotiate a better mat pay package than you?

It could be a tax rebate. I got a tax refund for 3 months total taking me above the usual mat leave between June-August. I’m assuming she might be on a higher salary than you, or has loans (students etc) on her file.

@Steph @Geti she never said why but said she is getting that amount and I told her how much I got. From what I heard a couple years ago she cried to managers saying she needed more money so somehow got paid more money but that’s meant to be secret. She is having a summer baby though so maybe that could be why. I didn’t find out my maternity pay until I was 32 weeks gone she has found out at 10 weeks

Sounds like she's just paid more than you, has been lucky with a tax rebate or you have lots of deductions for student loan, pension or whatever. Your maternity pay policy will likely have been available internally before either of you were pregnant so that feels irrelevant.

As above. Likely you've paid tax and she hasn't, depends on when in the tax year your mat leave starts. Maybe tax back for her? There's a few factors

Sounds like she’s on a higher wage 💰 3 of us work in my department all do the same thing all on different wages 🤷🏻‍♀️

@Megan oh yeah, or this! Just because you do the job doesn't necessarily mean you're paid the same!

She probably has a higher wage than you
