I had to claim MA due to having to change jobs so wasn't there long enough for stat.. I applied for UC for a little help but got nothing. They deducted the whole allowance from what I would get not the 55p that they state as they consider it a benefit. I would have received something if I was on stat.. Hope that helps.
Just to add.. As I didn't receive nothing from UC I couldn't get the one off maternity grant of £500 as they do not consider MA a benefit but would have got this if I had received any UC.. So in essence the system is a little messed up.
When I was on maternity throught my.work place, I got money deducted off my uc for being what they called over benefits 😑 the system a bit mess up of u ask me
You don’t get anything from UC until after baby is born if you’re claiming Maternity Allowance. They deduct every penny of your MA from whatever you are entitled to from UC. You don’t get both
I’m receiving UC & MA, I still get a decent amount
@Louise I’m not sure how old your little one is but you can claim the maternity grant once baby is here and you’re entitled to UC child element. You have 6 months from baby’s birth to apply for the maternity grant
I think it depends on the total income of the household, even though my wage was halved being on maternity allowance I wasn’t eligible for anything else because of my partners wage 🤷🏻♀️
I got MA and UC due to being off sick from work my entire pregnancy, so not eligible for statutory Mat pay. UC deducted over £700 a month from me which was more than I received from MA. This was because MA is paid every 4 weeks and UC is monthly, so they calculate MA based on how much you would be paid in a year even though MA don’t pay out for an entire year. It’s ridiculous but my kids and I survived on it.
When you’re on MA it is deducted £ for £, so yes essentially everything you earn from MA is then deducted again.
@Frayere do UC deduct much though?
They pretty much deduct my MA, plus some more due to my partners earnings. Feel free to message me if you’d like
@Donna Woods I tried. Unfortunately because I wasn't getting anything from UC after they deducted MA I could not receive the grant.
@Louise but after you had your baby, you would have been entitled to the child element of UC 😅 the system doesn’t make sense
Nope MA cancels it out. Trust me I tried. @Donna Woods

Yep I got £0 had to survive on the £184 a week for the whole 9 months!
@Donna Woods as long as you’re getting payments from UC you will receive it, if MA gets deducted and your payment shows as £0 you won’t get anything
@Frayere thank you 🤍 I thought that was the case, which I said above. I was only confused as Louise had said otherwise
I thought that UC started paying you once your mat allowance had reduced from your workplace? Or at least help to reach a cap every month? That’s of your more claiming housing as well.
@Kaltun MA doesn’t come from the workplace at all. It’s direct from the government. You’re probably thinking of SMP.
@N 💞 yes that what I mean 😅
they give you an amount that they ignore and then every pound more than that deducts 55p off of your UC. You can still get help with housing it all depends how much you make a month and if you have a partner to help. If all your making is the standard £183 a week then they should help you with a standard amount, then for your child and also housing cost. Hope that makes sense xx
