How much?

I love seeing everyones ideas on here it helped me out alot when my son was a bit younger. He's now 15m, and I'm starting to question if he's eating too much or too little. How do you know how much is enough?

I think at this age they are still pretty good at self regulating. Most kids eat when they're hungry and stop when they're full. It's adult behaviors (like clean your plate, for example), that lead to overeating and other negative behaviours. For us for example, my girl has some days where she eats more and others where she eats very little. But her growth is on track so I'm letting her decide how much to eat. I present her with options and she decides whether or not to eat them. That way you're still in control of what they are eating, but it gives them some independence. It seems to be working well for us.

My little man is 16months and same as the first comment, some days he’s ravenous, others he doesn’t eat much at all. Loves a graze throughout the day so sometimes we just run with that.

Thanks for the responses ladies! We have been letting him tell us when he is done. I just worry too much 😅 He eats more for me and less for his dad. As long as he's saying he's done then he should be ok?

Likewise with the first two comments - although I have to admit that I do find the days where he eats very little quite stressful. It seems like he’s fuelled by air at times! In terms of mealtimes the NHS says 3 meals and 2 snacks for this age. Realistically though we usually get in 2 decent meals a day (if that) and the odd snack. I tend to do picky plates when he’s not eating well that he can help himself to - fruit, veg crudités, a small amount of cheese, ideally a small sandwich etc/other carb. As for portion sizes I’ve variously seen it recommended that you fill no more than a side plate (NHS) or approx 1/3 of an adult size portion (might have been on Start for Life but can’t find this any more?!), - then let your child ask for more food if they’re still hungry. This tends to be a realistic amount for my kid to eat, but he’s a bit older than yours at nearly 2.
