How to deal with picky eating

How do you deal with your 3 year old being a picky eater? My 3 year old is always starving (as they say) but whatever I put down, she doesn’t want and refuses to eat. She literally just wants to snack on rubbish which I’m not giving in to. We spoke to the HV and dietitian (a family friend) and they both advised not to offer an alternative and to control the narrative for her because she’s trying to control the situation. Keep it clear that there’s set meal times and they’ll eat at those times, the same as they do at nursery to keep it consistent. Just wondered what others out there do?

We do exactly what your HV and dietician suggested, because we know our little boy likes what we were offering, he would obviously just prefer the sweet stuff and snacks (wouldn't we all🤪), and it genuinely has worked. Hes gone back to eating his meals properly, took a few weeks of consistency x

The same as above. We now don’t have anything like crisps etc in the house. If he doesn’t eat he doesn’t eat. Chances are the next meal he gobbles down!

Thanks both. I’ll keep going and hopefully it gets better. When it gets to how much they eat (if they do), where do you draw the line and say they’ve eaten enough for a treat for example? X

We generally only have treats when we are out. So we just don’t have biscuits, chocolate, crisps etc. (it helps that I’m diabetic so we have never had it in the house) BUT we do let him basically order whatever he wants if we go out. So he can have a cake or colourful biscuit if we go to a cafe, or chips and more chips if we go out for dinner as it’s just not that often. I’m sure the time will come when we will be buying treats but I want him to be at the age where we can say you can have 1 a day or just a weekends etc. and he understands that.

@Naomi perfect, thanks so much. Sorry one more question 🤣 if your little one didn’t eat dinner, would you offer a supper later or would that be it? X

I usually say at least half because I never give a huge portion anyway, his food is always on a toddler plate. But similar to Naomi that treat isnt always given at home, not a biscuit, cake or chocolate anyway. Usually more like a piece of fruit, yoghurt, even those yo bear fruit winder things or a organix oat/banana bar are his favourites! And my little one has never totally skipped his dinner but if he did I probably would offer him some supper but it would only be a bowl of cereal or a slice of toast. Just so he sleeps properly and doesn't wake up hungry because then he's waking me up and I loose enough sleep with my baby haha x

If it’s something new he has never had before (I cooked fennel on Saturday and he hated it!) then yes I offer him something else. If it’s something he likes or has eaten before then no I don’t offer anything else. I simply tell him he doesnt have to eat it if his tummy is full, but you do have to wait at the table until mummy and daddy have finished and that there is no more food until breakfast etc.
