Weaning

I’m trying to prepare for weaning in the next couple of weeks but it just seems like a minefield! I’ve heard the solid starts app is good so I’m going to sign up for that but everything I read conflicts each other. What time of day do I first feed baby? Do I start with baby rice/ cereal or veg? When do I increase from 1 meal to 2 etc. I’m totally lost! Any advice appreciated Thank you

I purchased the solid starts first 100 days guide and it answers all your questions really. It’s 50usd so wasn’t cheap but we found it helped get us on the right track with my first. She’s two now and an excellent eater! We really enjoyed weaning and can’t wait to start with the little one.

I found the Joe Wickes wean in 15 podcast really helpful! With my first I did 2 weeks of vegetables to begin with (puréed / mashed alongside steamed finger food versions of the veg). I gave at lunch to start with so his belly could get used to digesting food a little and he wasn’t uncomfortable before bed - also meant there was plenty of time to monitor for any reactions. Then added in breakfast next (porridge/yoghurt/stewed fruit/toast etc) and added dinner as our 3rd meal. We had a weaning course through our health visitor and they advised that once baby is eating a portion about the size of the palm of their hand (or 2ish tbsp) then they’re probably ready to increase from 1 meal to 2, then 2 to 3 etc. All the advice out there can be so conflicting so I’d say just follow your baby’s lead! I found it was much more straight forward and progressed a lot more naturally (adding meals etc) than I was worried about beforehand. Sorry for the essay!! X

I've just signed up for the solid starts class on baby academy, it's free x

@Cath no need to apologise, it’s helpful, thank you! I’ll give it a listen too. @Kristen thank you x

I'd get a book then they lay everything out in one place and you can follow that. I used Ella's kitchen & Annabel Karmel books for purees though they have some finger foods. "What mummy makes" has good recipes you can make for baby and yourself/whole family so you don't have to cook multiple things. With my first we started with "breakfast" kinda mid- morning. I heard it's best to start with that so they have time to digest and stuff rather than bedtime which can disrupt sleep. Lots of people will tell you not to bother with baby rice/cereal but I found baby porridge convenient when first starting as you can make up like 1 spoonful at a time so you aren't wasting lots and it's an easy intro for you and baby. I did just breakfast for a week then added lunch and not sure but waited a little while to add dinner too.

I started with the baby porridge in the morning, then tried puree fruit. She now eats 2 meals. Porridge in the morning and purée veg for a later meal. I would say try bubba on different things and see what they like. Also depends on their appetite at this present time, we have had days where she doesn’t want the 2nd meal so we settle for a bottle.
