When to stop purées

Hi all, my baby was born prem 6 weeks early on 24th May. She is now 9 months. She has two front teeth and when eating she doesn’t chew she bites and swallows. I’ve had two choking incidents and since then I’ve been hesitant to give finger food or anything that’s not mashed into puree. It says online we should stop purées by this age but how do i stop if she doesn’t know how to chew? I’m so afraid. I usually try to eat with my lo so she can see me chewing but she still hasn’t learnt. Is anyone in the same situation where they are fully dependent on purée’s ?

When you say choking, do you mean gagging (making noise, coughing, going red) or has she gone silent, and stopped breathing? She will probably have to get used to the skill of chewing and gagging with more solid food is to be expecting. Obviously if she completely stopped breathing and needed hospital then it’s a little different. My little one has always refused to be spoon fed so we have been baby led from 6 months. She took some time but now chews her food well despite only having one tooth x

I don’t mean to sound harsh but if she doesn’t have an opportunity to chew, then she won’t. She needs to feel different textures and lumpy foods to get used to chewing, learn how to swallow appropriate sized bites etc. Could it be gagging? It can look quite severe x

My son was 8 weeks premature and I noticed around 10-11 months that he still couldn’t tolerate anything that wasn’t pureed completely smooth. Almost 3 years down the line he’s been diagnosed with cerebral palsy and turns out he was unable to eat solids when he was younger due to the swallow problems that can come along with cp xx

Try giving them age appropriate snacks like the ella's kitchen snacks?

She will learn how to chew as she gets used to putting finger foods in her mouth

she doesn’t need to know how to chew by giving her foods she can chew on she’ll learn quite fast give it a couple of weeks, you could start on something like a carrot
