Does anyone know?

I have a part time job with a fixed term contract that has a 70% chance of being extended but would end while I was on maternity leave. I then work locum/bank as a nurse the other days but still employed on PAYE. How does this work with maternity ??

Ps. Not pregnant but curious as I would like my 2nd at some point 😫

You can fill in an application for maturnity allowance

You might qualify for SMP for one or both, depends on how long you’ve worked there and how much you earn, but here is the relevant advice + there is a link on that page to the gov maternity checker: https://www.acas.org.uk/your-maternity-leave-pay-and-other-rights/working-out-maternity-pay If you don’t qualify through either, you can apply for maternity allowance. It’s also worth noting that if your contract would be renewed if you weren’t on mat leave, they can’t terminate it just because you’re pregnant/on mat leave, even if it’s fixed term. There still has to be a business reason. And even if they do terminate it while you’re on mat leave, if you qualified for SMP through that employer, they have to keep paying you SMP.

@Rhiannon oh wow ok so for example if contract was “ending” March 2026 and you were due March 2026 they would still have to pay for the smp?
