I HATE BLW

Baby led weaning is overwhelming. I just saw a video where her mom fed her baby ravioli, strawberries, and purées. I don't understand why we're pushing babies to eat so much right now when breastmilk or formula should be their main source of nutrition and why do I feel insane amount of pressure to do this? I want him to be comfortable with food and have a good relationship. It feels extremely overwhelming.

It's important though. Even if they don't eat it and just play with it - exposing them to allergens and teaching them how to eat (again even if they don't actually eat now) is crucial. Learning to eat takes practice! You don't need to do BLW - you can stick to purees. We did a combo of both with my first. It's seems crazy now but 6 months flies by & then solids will be the main source of nutrition before you know it.

I think a combo is great, I've introduced PB, eggs, dairy and let him play with it. I just see all of these moms feed their baby full plates / don't give milk anymore and it got to me!

It is overwhelming, just start small. One new food a week? I started at dinner time with baby oatmeal cereal that way if she got messy she was going in the bath anyway plus if she actually ate it she would sleep fuller

We do BLW and I’ve always found it way less overwhelming than purées and that transition, but everyone is different! Breastmilk or formula should definitely still be the main source of nutrition. We don’t do full meals like that though until a year. Like today, I made carrot muffins and sweet potato fries for our blw little one. She’ll have those easy to grab things and I might give her a random other thing or tastes of things here and there. Just whatever we’re having outside of whatever special things I have made for her.

Sometimes the online perception of feeding baby the perfect meal makes it feel like we are falling short in our journey and then the overwhelm sets it. Know that while it is important to teach baby how to eat, a lot of it is sensory like some of the ladies said above. If you aren’t having a good time they may not either. Take it slow, remember there’s no pressure and it’s okay to take small baby steps. 🫶keep doing awesome thing girl!

I give my daughter full plates. 2-3 times a day, but she still drinks 32 oz of milk daily. I want my daughter to always try new foods so we started very early. It’s a decision you have to make for your family. Some people do more or less.

@Erica these babes should still be having milk as primary nutrients!! BLW has some great support for helping kids learn to eat independently, build confidence with food, be less picky and eating a wider variety of foods, but food before one is just for fun! Don’t let it stress you, do what is best for you and you babe.

It's not so much about pushing but transitioning you can't just decide one day to give them food and have them eat it. I started my son on solids at 4 months but he's almost 7 now and still only eats solids sometimes. Just no honey, or anything they can be allergic to and peanut butter till after 12 mos hope this helps!! Much love ❤️

I actually use my milk to make the purees I feed him. For breakfast this morning (oatmeal cereal), I used 1.5 oz of breastmilk, and for today's dinner, I used 4oz of breastmilk. It makes me personally feel better about the solids because I'm getting that milk into it.

Totally don’t feel pressured to start really feeding! Part of baby-led weaning is just offering them stuff to gnaw on, play with, and taste. They’ll start munching it down whenever they’re ready

@Panda some pediatricians actually want you to introduce baby to allergen foods such as PB, meat, just not honey before a year old to see if they are allergic. The earlier it’s caught, higher possibility of reversing that allergy so they can eat it as they get older.

@Rosalie this! My baby isn’t super hungry for food yet but he loves gnawing on large pieces of whatever I’m eating. The nutrition still primarily comes from milk so he’ll start eating whenever he’s ready - the food is being offered 😅

mine is on pureé and breastfeeding only... i see a lot of babies eating yummy foods but all about going at your own pace. dont stress food will come

@Alicia girl thank you for saying that. Absolutely terrible info. You need to be introducing allergan early and often so allergies do not develop. I just didn't want to get into it. And if your pediatrician says no.... I'd find a new one. 😂

@Courtney I’ve had two tell me to but since she said that she was told not to, I didn’t wanna start an argument and say “all pediatricians say you need to” but I agree. Find a new one if they say no. Babies need that exposure just like everyday life things as well.

Introduced foods and realized my baby is allergic to everything. Also prick tested. So far we got Dairy Eggs Salmon Peanut Sesame …garlic??? lol I feel like if I waited then she wouldn’t have been so allergic like she is now. She has an EpiPen and she’s only 6months

I never have her real dairy or real eggs yet and it’s a good thing because she is highly highly allergic

Gave* I realized she was allergic to peanuts so I tested

@Shevy girl, six months is when they say to start introducing things, there really was no earlier to introduce things. I’m so sorry Momma but you got this. Kids can also grow out of a lot of childhood allergies so hopefully she will.

@Shevy it’s best you caught it sooner than later mommas. I was one of those babies that was allergic to dairy, wheat even in breast milk. Because they caught it early I was put on restriction then slowly introduced as I got a little older, around 3-4 maybe? And by kindergarten I could have everything and have zero allergies still. Ask your pediatrician about doing the restriction then reintroduction. I know it doesn’t help all kids, but it does help a lot and even may help some of those allergies if not all.
