The advice I got given with my first was to start with veg purees so they don't end up preferring sweet stuff. I just got a bag of mixed frozen veg, boiled it, separated veg, pureed them then froze as ice cubes, lasted like a month. Also if your partner wants to do more natural weaning, is he going to help you by doing research and batch cooking it etc? All very well for him to say that if he's going to leave it all to you anyway as it is a lot more work to make everything from scratch when they get to needing more complex purees after a couple of months.
I was told they shouldn’t have things like weetabix etc. They should only have natural things. Best to start with mashed up veg like broccoli etc
Ella's kitchen have some great advice on veg first weaning- really simple and easy to follow. You can order the free kit here with a veg chart and some recipe ideas for a little later on. https://www.ellaskitchen.co.uk/join-ellas-friends?ref=Pmax&gclsrc=aw.ds&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiA8q--BhDiARIsAP9tKI2SUtc7yEdiGY7WcS-Mh2ys-KnYp-yv8N3EG8a2fqm0jiHTTjF7f98aAgSzEALw_wcB
My partner was the same with our 1st and will be the same again. So I would make steamed veggies, scrambled egg, mashed potatoes, really soft baby pasta. I eventually gave Weetabix just before she turned 1. Rusks are super high in sugar but there are lots of alternatives if/when you’re ready to try them.
Is your HV not advising on this? Ours gave us some info and an app that tells you how to serve any food. I think it's handy though we haven't started weaning yet. The app is called Solid Starts and it's free * there's in app purchases of course 🙄 Try some mashed veg with a bit of water to make it runny is my plan to start anyway! Good luck :)
