I usually go to Smyths and let my child choose the toy- set a budget and just pick something an X yr old child would like

yes a night light sounds good! if in doubt you could always ask the parent about the night light, either way if the child is raised right they’ll appreciate it xx
I tend to go safe with pjs. Every kid needs pjs, the size is 80% what the age they are turning and if they don’t like the design, it’s only pjs, they will still wear them. A night light is a good idea though. My son loves his dino night light. Dino clothes, dino monster trucks, dino play mat, Jurassic park play set, stickers and colouring. This is the type of stuff my son got given by his class mates. Depends on the age of the kid. Clothes are always helpful
How old is he? I normally get something generic like Lego for a boy.
