Weaning

My baby is 6 months end of April so I’m starting to look at weaning her. I’m absolutely petrified though to give her solid bits of food and no idea where to start with it all. What did everyone do? How often to give them food? Did you just give purées or solid too? It’s scaring me 😅

Same! Our little one is 6 months on the 20th April and excited but worried about choking

@Sarah exactly what I’m worried about 😅

I’m having to wean early because of reflux issues. I’m starting on baby rice and homemade veg purées with 2 teaspoons a day. And as soon as she is 6 months will be adding solid bits alongside the purée, so she can get used to tastes and textures at the same time

Try the "What Mummy Makes" book if you're interested in BLW it was amazing for my first x

With my first I started with just baby porridge and purées gave her a bit at a time before a bottle then built it up and gave her soft veggies and fruit when she was ready, there’s an app I used called solid starts which tells you how you should serve the different foods and at what age also has different recipes to it was really handy xx

Solid starts on Instagram has some good info I think

you’d also don’t *have* to ween at 6 months if you or your baby isn’t ready for it. milk for the first year is perfectly fine for them.

We started weaning early, started on baby rice for texture/gentle for stomach. Then introduced puréed veggies and fruits in small amounts 3x per day, so for example some fruit on a morning, some veg at dinner time then more fruit on an evening (just remember it’s for taste/texture not to fill them up). We offer sips of water alongside her food and she’s had the odd meltypuff here and there. Will be introducing actual solids once she hits 6 months in a couple of weeks time 😬 All the P fruits (prunes, pears, peaches etc) are good to prevent constipation when introducing new foods 🙂 *side note - we introduced early because baby was ready but all are different. She sits in her high chair unsupported etc and grabs at food/sits with her mouth wide open when we eat in front of her and tries to take off the plate 😂

@Terri how do you know when there ready?

@Amber mostly showing signs of being interested in food, some babies have no interest so trying to grab at your food etc and knows that’s it’s food. They should also be able to sit in the high chair with little support, so not sort of slumping when you sit them. Good hand eye coordination I.e can bring food from hand to mouth. Our little one is more interested in food than milk so for us it’s a struggle to keep her milk intake up rather than food intake 🙈 Oh and has lost the tongue thrust (shouldn’t push food out the mouth as an automatic reaction). Honestly it was a minefield when we started but I always say give it a go and if you think it’s not right then try again in another couple of weeks 🙂

Really recommend Charlotte Stirling Read’s book “How to wean your baby”. I weaned my first using it… It has a 30 day guide, how to introduce allergens and lots of recipes that can work for all weaning stages (and family meals). We still make lots of them now!

Charlotte Stirling-Reed also has a great Instagram page full of free advice. Ella's kitchen have a good website. I used the What Mummy Makes book a lot with my first (we still use it to make things and he's 3).
