First foods

My son's pediatrician said I can give my son solids soon as he has great head control. Thinking of doing bone marrow as his first foods. Maybe followed by fruit eventually. She suggested grain like plain rice but I don't think that's as nutritional as a first food. What are y'all planning on feeding as a first food?

Food before 1 is for practice so literally anything ur wanting to do is fine

I started both my kids on foods at 4 months, they didn’t actually eat the food, more like tasted but I started with fruit which my first loveeddd , however my second is a salty savory kind of baby so he really enjoyed sautéed mushrooms, chicken , chilli 😅 honestly only thing he’s really ate and not just tasted was apple bananas and mandarins. He lovessss them. But I agree, give your child little tastes of things, more than likely they will just spit out what you give them anyways even if they like it. They still have to practice getting the food to the back and swallowing it.

They’ll get their nutrition from formula/breastmilk which will remain the primary source of food until one. Actual food is just for practice. I had a doctor tell me that starting with grains is ideal because it’s plain. Sometimes if you start with something , like fruit, baby will get a taste for that sweet stuff and not want anything else. The biggest thing is just starting with single ingredient foods and riding it out for a few days to make sure there are no allergies.

@Chloe @Lauren Food before 1 supposedly is very important. From 6 months on, it's important to start a nutritional diet. It helps with oral skills, allergies (As Lauren mentions) and meeting their nutritional needs. @Lauren I agree with you on single ingredient foods for the first week or so. But in terms of baby only wanting sweet things, I thankfully did not experience that with my first. We give her a variety of foods, like vegetables and fruit. She doesn't LOVE meat but it's a texture thing. She'll eat slow cooked braised meats though. She loves Indian food too! But it's really good to start early to be able to build on that palate. "Food before 1 is just for fun" is a myth 😭

Our peds doctor gave us the go ahead at our 4 month appointment as well and like stated above important for allergies. They said to try a new food every 3 days to make sure there’s no reaction. We have done banana, applesauce, rice (smushed), avocado, strawberry. Blueberries & Peanut butter are next (our peds said PB was fine as long as it was watered down with breastmilk and super super easy to swallow aka drink!)

We got to start rice and oatmeal early. As of him turning 4 months he has had all vegetables. He is 5 months now and has been chewing. He has had mashed potatoes, mashed bananas, dinner rolls

I’ll definitely be waiting until after 6 months (due to development of gut, babies shouldn’t have anything but BM for the first 6 months), and waiting until baby is ready, I’m sure she will let me know when she is ready. I’ll also be giving her foods she can use her hands with to eat as it’s very helpful developmentally, nothing blended ☺️ avocado, tomatoes, celery, chicken, turkey, beef, eggs etc. and of course some fruits like banana, mango, strawberries, peach etc. 🩷

@Imalai Yes absolutely a great idea on doing BLW. Helps them regulate their own bites and what not. My pediatrician said go for it since my son is 20lbs and showing lots of interest in food. And it would only be once a day till he's 6 months old ☺️ Steamed whole broccoli florets, big pieces of steamed carrots. Avocado slices, omelettes cut long ways. And even preloaded spoons are great! Also planning on making yogurt with my breastmilk as it'll be a great probiotic and wonderful for the gut! 🫶🏽
