Maternity leave

I heard on nugget (Instagram page for maternity leave) that the date your maternity leave ends determins weather your child can get the free child care hours. As the nursery's use 'terms' like schools, for this year if your maternity leave doesn't end by the 30th April, you are not eligible until the next term which is September. Leaving you to pay full for 4 months. Does anyone know if this this the case for us next year?

Yes it is, you can be on annual leave from work but not on actual maternity leave

So it’s when baby turns 9 months and when the next term begins, you only get the grant from the beginning of a term so yes for us that’s end of April cut off as baby’s 9 months after that we have to wait for august/sept for funding, also look in to tax free childcare on top you can usually get 20% off childcare up to £2000 a year, you don’t have to wait for that though as soon as they start nursery they can have that 🙂

Thank you both 😊 I would never have known if I hadn't seen their post!

It’s the term after their eligibility. So for 3 year funding the term after their 3rd birthday, same with 2 year funding and obviously the term after they turn 9 months for 9 month funding. My oldest daughter was due at the end of August so she would have been due to start funding in September but she arrived 9 days late on the 6th September so not only pushed herself back a school year but also wasn’t entitled to any funding until the January after her birthday. It’s silly really that it doesn’t start from their actual birthdays but I guess it makes the admin easier for the government/nurseries etc using the terms x

Yes this is right! So our June babies will turn 9 months in March, but if you don’t return to work by 30th April you won’t get the funding until September. My maternity officially ends in March and then I’m using all my holiday to return in April, so just make the deadline! Like to say it was planned 😅
