Weaning

Hi Mums, I have a ten month old boy, he’s a thriving baby, very much still formula fed, but I’m getting worried about weaning him. He still loves his milk, and I have tried giving him mushed foods, but he’s just not interested. I’m worried to death about giving him whole foods, even if they are chopped up. I’m home a lot and I don’t have any support from family or friends to help me. This morning I made scrambled eggs with bits of grated cheese, with puree and strawberries chopped up, on the side. He just looked at me, and kept turning away when I went to feed him. He’s not that fussed about feeding himself either when I place the foods in front of him Yesterday we made a lasagne, I gave him a some, and soon after he lost interest, before throwing it up. I think the mince may have been too dry when taking it and trying to swallow He has two teeth coming through at the front now, and he sleeps solid since 3 months old, about 10/11 hours. He’s a long baby, and well covered, not under weight at all, so his formula is still doing wonders for him. He’s very happy in himself and not fussy any other time. I’m just getting worried now that he should be having more solid foods, but his lack of interest and my worry for giving him foods, is clashing and I just don’t know how to do it. Please help with any advice you have. Be kind. Thank you

Have you spoken to your HV? They might have some advice for you. Ours is still on 4 bottles a day and she was the same with weaning up until about 3/4 weeks ago when she just suddenly changed overnight. Keep offering food and he will get there. You’re doing great mumma xx

Our little one loves his milk as well and up until 2 weeks ago he was still having five 6oz bottles a day. We had his 10-12 month check with the HV and she said that we were giving him too much formula. So we’ve cut it down to 4 bottles a day now and next week will try 3 bottles a day. Basically, you want them to be hungry enough to want/try their food. Our little one wasn’t massively interested in ever finishing a meal, just picked at it and then refused to eat more. Now he is excited and hungry for his meals and finishes so much more of them. He just needed to be hungry for them. So now we always give him a meal first and then offer a bottle an hour/hour and a half later because we don’t want him to not eat his meal and then just assume we’ll feed him straight after. For example, our little one still wakes for a feed in the night… So if he woke up for a bottle at 4am, when he wakes up at 6:15am we’ll give him weetabix first and then his second bottle before his first nap

Of the day at 10am. Then he’ll have his lunch around 12:30 and his next bottle at 2ish before his afternoon nap. Then his last bottle before bedtime at 7pm. So the stretches between bottles are longer, therefore he is hungrier during the day for food. I hope that makes sense. 💞 In terms of food, we went back to basics a bit with simple mushed/blended up meals like stew, spag bol, chilli etc with just a yoghurt for pudding and then slowly introduced more textured foods and finger foods. I’d say just take your time and let your little one get comfortable with some basic meals and then once he starts to properly enjoy them and finish them, then introduce more textured foods. Lots of praise! Make a big deal out of him eating his meals. 😃 Every baby is so different and I used to worry about him doing everything by a certain time but now I just think he will do it when he’s ready. If he’s still having a couple of bottles a day when he’s one then it’s not the end of the world. ☺️ x

Thank you both. I will contact my HV Monday for more help. X
