Absolutely normal. There are some excellent resources online to help you see the difference between choking and gagging, and your kid is going to gag before they figure out the limits to their own mouths. That's just how kids work tbh. My son is almost 16 months old and still occationally over fills his mouth. He gags on it, spits it out, then is more careful for the remainder of the meal. We monitor him, make sure it's not actual choking, but it's just part of growing up to occationally overfill your mouth and gag on it a bit. To help you can give them little bits at a time, little mouth sized pieces etc, but they'll have to learn eventually, and it's better for them to learn while their gag reflex is stronger, so they are less likely to actually choke.
Totally normal don't worry! Try not to take it out unless she's struggling they learn quickly what they can manage
It’s a normal part of their learning (as scary as it is), they will learn that they can’t eat all of that food and they may gag and even make themselves sick but that is all normal. Parents modelling biting food and chewing food is recommended too. You won’t be able to stop it but you can just make it as safe as possible so make sure food is modified correctly (e.g. broccoli should be cut into quarters to take the round shape away from the stalk which is the perfect size/shape for choking). And just be ready to act if they do choke so you know what to do, maybe try a first aid course? My daughter is nearly 22 months now and thankfully has not choked but we had plenty of over stuffing and gagging!
There’s a really good group on Facebook if you’re on there? So supportive and knowledgable x
It's very unlikely she is going to choke, naturally babies will spit out what they can't swallow
I was terrified of my baby choking especially when she tried pasta for the first time but as long as it’s small enough to not block their airway they’ll be fine. A baby will choke but they’re bodies with force them to throw up instead of actually choking (: it’s scary but they’ll be okay.💜
As hard as it is, let her do her thing, as babies do quickly realise what they can and can't handle! That gag reflex is strong, so absolutely let her use it as this will actually help prevent choking 🙂. My girl is 10 months now and shoves whole pieces of fusilli pasta in her mouth! Lol
I'm feeling the exact same thing!!!!
Our dr told us it's normal. COUGHING MEANS BREATHING. And not to intervene. Stuffing their face is how they LEARN how much they hold in their mouth. Its silly but also you can mimicking "cough cough and spit food out" or push out with ur tounge. My girl will spit food out if it's too much but our dr said let her stuff her mouth, even if she coughs, it's how she learns.
My baby has had solids since 6 months, no purées. We did a baby first aid course and then made sure we prepped everything according to Solid starts. At that age bigger is better so a whole Brocolli floret is fine. When we first started we’d give him a mouthful at a time to pick up, mainly to stop him dropping lots but it might help avoid lots of pasta in the mouth at once. I’d usually put one of each thing in front of him for him to pick and choose. I also leave it out for dessert. He’ll often finish his yogurt/fruit and go back looking for his celery.
maybe just try doing a few bits of pasta on her highchair tray to start and let her learn to pace herself? but for my boy who also is (nearly) 8 months, giving him bigger foods wasn’t working so we have just been giving quite small bite size pieces xx
