Weening help !

Really looking for some advice my son is now 8 months nearly but for two months he spent it in hospital and then struggled with reflux and got put on gaviscon so he was late ISH to weening as he was poorly or struggled with reflux he's been having pouches and some yogurts here and there and one meal a day as well as his milk but he doesn't know what to do with the food unless it's smooth and fed to him I put the plate Infront of him and he doesn't know what to do with it most things he tries he doesn't like he doesn't like carrots or broccoli or chicken the only thing he letrally likes is sweet stuff like yogurts or them fruit pouch things when I plate food up for him on his tray he pulls a face and won't pick it up what do I do? I'm really trying to encourage him do I keep just putting the plate down and leave it there? At meal times we are sat for 30/40mins until I take the plate away I just don't know what to do I want him to self feed and get messy enjoy it but if he gets food in his hands or anywhere on his body he cries could I just have a clean baby 😂

You just have to keep trying. Model it yourself, eat some off his plate so he knows to pick it up. Try holding the floret of broccoli and let him take it out of your hand. It’s all for exploration when you first start weaning. Babies naturally put things in their mouth but some don’t like mess so you could give him pre loaded spoons of mashed broccoli etc. If he’s taking purées then avoid too many sweet pouches and go for the veg ones to get his taste buds used to savoury flavours x

I agree with Marissa. Also, just so you are aware broccoli should be quartered to remove the roundness from the stem and carrots also need to have the roundness removed so long quarters etc is ideal ☺️

@Lauryn hey xx why does the roundness need ti ve removed, so carrot sticks not circle? X

@Stacey because the roundness can block baby’s airways unfortunately

My little boy was like this, and still is now, he’s almost 3, at around 9 months we introduced food play, there’s no stress on eating what’s there, when they eat they’ll eat, don’t stress over the amount, I learnt this the hard way, it is so true when they say they’ll eat when they’re hungry, encourage them even just to play with it, we made a dinosaur forest with his broccoli, and even touching it was a huge step, eventually I turned around at about 18 months and he was eating it! It’s a process if you rush he’ll go the other way x

We started at 6 months, she's now 8 months and only just happy to pick up food! Was fine from the start with preloaded spoon which she fed herself. I just kept putting bits down and encourage her by showing her myself eating. Has taking a while but she's getting there. Keep trying and it'll click, just don't put pressure as no good for you or baby

Just keep offering and giving the opportunity. It's a new skill they need to learn and that takes time. Make sure things are cut/served approximately (solid starts has some good info for this) as that makes it easier for them to pick up too. Give milk about an hour before offering food so they aren't too hungry to try. Try messy play with food items such as baked beans so they can get used to touching messy stuff.

Honestly just keep trying. My daughter is now 11 months old and I think only 2 months ago she started to not feed herself like dinner but feed herself her little finger foods such as melt y sticks. There quite good for a baby to learn how to hold foods in their hand!🙂

Thank you everybody and for the pointers on how to cut food I'll be taking all advice on board very grateful XX

Hi, you can try to remove the plate and introduce it once he starts feeding himself. Don't put pressure on baby to eat as he actually does not know what everything is, anything safe for him and cut properly you should put on his tray and leave baby to it, watch him familiarise with it and give him some space, do this every day at lunch time or when he's not tired out, some food will be flying on the floor but don't mind it's playtime basically, after couple of days introduce the plate again and eat with him, this is what we done, my son now eat most foods and feeds himself now, bare in mind there are a few things he actually cannot stand the sight of, that's why you'll have to give him options amd be super patient GOOD LUCK 🥰
