Working moms: When did you realize that corporate America is NOT family friendly

I’ve been convinced that most corporations actually hate moms since I was like a teenager, but what confirmed it for me was how my job is forcing me to change my work hours to one that THEY KNOW I can’t work because I have to pick my kids up from daycare and school which both close at 5:30pm, they want me to work until 6 😒. I’ve told my work countless times I can’t work past 5. My husband already works crazy hours and til this long I’ve been the one with the most “stable” work hours. This is honestly one the reasons I’m done having kids. The system is set up to fail us in every aspect 😩

I’ve never known them to be family friendly?? I thought this was commonly known tbh. But I’m sorry that they were like this with you.

@✨Wis 🇭🇹 I know but everyone has a moment of realization where they were like damn they really don’t like us… and this is my moment where I feel that resistance and impact on my life. so was just curious about others experiences and pov.

Personally I knew America in general wasn’t family friendly the moment I learned maternity leave isn’t given to everyone and I had to see my aunt go back to work 2 weeks after an emergency cesarean. This sobered me up real quick years ago. It’s sad that’s the reality.

On a related note, I feel like everyone thinks teaching is a family friendly profession and it’s really not in so many ways.

this is exactly why i became a daycare teacher bc no matter what my hours were my children would have childcare plus i would get a discount etc.

And with employers asking if you have childcare and what kind and where. They do not gaf and they’re women who have children?!??? It’s pathetic/gross on every level. It’s not the corporations, it’s the people. No humanity in humans.

In my last position at my current company. My boss had me working insane hours with her knowing good and well I had a toddler at home.

You’re basically being backed into a corner: If you quit, you can’t say wrongful termination. If you don’t go in when they schedule you for or leave early, they can fire you “ethically.” Jobs are very corrupt.

@Denise I know 😕 and if they’re not trying to compromise bc it’s not like it’s new, they’ve been knowing this since I started working there 2 yrs ago, then I’m going to have to leave obviously. I just don’t have a back up plan which is stressing me out…and it would honestly be their loss bc I’m a damn good employee and person so whatever lol. I just hope that things work out for the better, it’s scary out here..

I think some people would tell you to find a babysitter to do pick up, but honestly, when you work for employers that do corrupt things like this, it’ll only be a matter of time before they make another request they know you can’t do, as a way to push you out of the position. I personally would start applying for other jobs immediately. Getting a job is so hard nowadays.

@Denise definitely and they’ve already been trying to push the limits by asking me to work weekends occasionally and since I work in healthcare, on call. I’ve already been bending trying to find child care for those occasional weekends and on call, so having a babysitter for pick up is so completely unrealistic for us on top of daycare full time. Childcare is expensive. I know they don’t care. I think my time is just about up here anyway. I just think it’s wild that these places expect people to operate on robot time… idk but yeah I’m definitely applying to other jobs….
