Purées

Can I have some advice, I started weaning my baby a week last Monday. We have been doing a mixture of BLW and purées. However my little one doesn’t seem to want purées but as she’s got no teeth I don’t feel like she’s having anything from solids only. Should I be worried about this or not. She only turned 6 months last week so we are really new to this but I don’t know what’s best to do for her.

Some babies don’t like purées it’s not a concern. I would start off with soft cooked veg like broccoli and just mash it up with a bit of a sweet potato puree pouch so it’s more like a solid food but still saucy so easy to swallow. Then you could try avacado and banana mashed. That type of food is just as sufficient as “solids”. They all result in a child who can eat. They are able to figure it out with their gums so don’t worry about that, just use the solid starts app to make sure you prepare it age appropriately. When they get to 8/9 months you have to change how you cut things. My LO is almost 11 months and I still mash everything up now, even the foods she eats with her hands. Finger food strips always made me nervous x

We never did purées. Anything soft enough to squish between your fingers works great!

its totally okay if baby isn't actually consuming much as far as solids go. right now you're just introducing flavors and textures.

My baby has just started solids as well and is mainly doing BLW over purees. It’s terrifying sometimes, especially the first few times letting her eat, as she kept gagging at almost everything, but she’s getting so good at it. I was given a book that details all of the foods that are safe for weaning, including how to serve them, and I read that thing all the way through. Tonight she even actually had a chicken drumstick (skin and small bones removed). She doesn’t get a ton in her mouth, but it’s more about the practice of independent eating I think. You can try letting her chew on a baby spoon, and then eventually start putting pre-loaded spoons with puree on them for her to put in her own mouth if you feel more comfortable with that.

Sorry for the multiple photo comments, I couldn’t figure out how to do more than one in a single comment. These are some of the meals she’s had though. I bought a couple of sets of silicone silverware, a food cutter, and straw cup (with removable lid) from Target and her high chair has a built in plate. Those have all been really helpful in encouraging her to eat, especially when we sit down to eat with her. She also does not have teeth, she has gotten really good about chewing things just with her gums, it all has to be very soft of course. Her favorite so far seems to be banana, which you can give them on their own just by cutting off the portion you want to give them, cutting a bit of the skin off of the top portion (leave some so that they have a hand hold, the banana gets really slippery if they just hold the fruit itself). It gets easier, especially when they get used to eating more solids.

babies don’t need to teeth to be able to eat solids, there’s a fb group called weaning the blw way and it was a godsend for me. She’s only just started weaning so don’t be worried, milk is still the form of nutrition at this age, everyday is different with solids
