Working mums.

Hi mamas I’m going back to work full time. I calculated how much I’ll earn and my son will go nursery after all bills and everything it will be £500 a month left. I feel like this is so little or am I over reacting ? Please let me know any current experiences

Presuming you’re in a couple, you need to look at the childcare costs against both of your salaries rather than absorbing them solely against yours. That’s the only way you’ll get a fair picture! Staying in work in some capacity is good for career progression, pensions accumulation etc. if you want to have another baby, better to be in a job where you can access maternity leave also!

If after you’ve paid all your bills and fees you have half a grand left for spending money each month then you’re doing better than half the country, we’re in the middle of a cost of living crisis and most people work 2 jobs and still can’t afford their rent. I definitely think £500 spare each month is more than enough…

After we've paid for bills, nursery, mortgage, food etc we each have about £150 at most to get us through the month, it's hard but it's doable. I just have to make it work, I don't want to up my hours as ill just end up forking out for more childcare, I wouldn't be much better off!

@Kay if you don’t mind me asking how much do you spend on food shop for the month?x

We budget about £300 - that goes on our Gousto and then the small shop we do each week. We could defo save money not using gousto but it's just so convenient and it stops me wasting stuff.

Yep, depending on your income that's realistic (but very frustrating). Me and my husband share all finances but I worked it out based on split pots and if nursery only came from my income, then after that and all existing bills like my car, phone, my share of mortgage, etc, I'm left with about £200 per month (im currently doing 3 days a week and this calculation is based off me working 4 days a week).

After spending money on everything you need to pay off having £500 purely as saving / spending money sounds amazing to me lol!
